Symbolism In Hi Yessi
Hi Yessi, In took me a while to understand the foreshadowing technique and the symbols the authors used. When I first read short story at the end I new the couple had committed suicide but I did understand how. I thought the cranes were use symbolic more than actual that why I though the cranes where use to express the passing of the couple instead of them flying off because of the loud sound. I guess I got too caught in trying to understand the short story that I forgot about the actual aspects.

Secondly, the next major literary technique used throughout the text was foreshadowing. The author left little hints that would end up leading to a major point in the plot. For example,"Toomsboro" is mentioned as the town the family passes right when the grandmother wakes up to remember the old plantation that isn't really there. To simply break it down, "Toomsboro" is mentioned right before the family falls into the hands of The Misfit. The word itself sounds like tomb, so we get some foreshadowing that the family is headed for doom.(O’Connor 193) Another example is when the family crashes and they see the hearse pull up. It was described as a"big black battered hearselike automobile" when it first came to help the family.(O’Connor 195)A hearse…

For example, the title indicates that the dream will die. “The best laid schemes of mice and men go often askew” (Doc A). The title of the book was taken from this line. It is hinting that their farm dream will die when it says that plans of mice and men go often askew. Also when Curley’s wife dies; it is foreshadowing for the farm dream dying. After killing her, Lennie says, “I done another bad thing” (Doc B). Lennie is realising that he just killed her, that the other guys are going to want to kill him, so he has to run away killing the farm dream. The foreshadowing in the book tells the readers that the farm dream will…

Near the end of the story, the reader wonders why each time Bobby Lee and Hiram takes someone into the forest, they never come back. Well at the end of the story the whole family is taken to die. June Star's comment that the grandmother goes everywhere the family goes can be read as a sign that she will meet the same fate as them. There's also another blatant foreshadowing in the story. The author describes that the grandmother is dressed very nice on the trip and the reason she gives is, "In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady." When a person dies, they usually are dressed in their best outfit, just like the grandmother was dressed in what seemed to be her Sunday best. This shows that there shouldn't be a shock if something fatal happens to her at the end. There's also one interesting foreshadowing image placed into the short story. While on the trip the family, "Passed by a cotton field with five or six graves fenced in the middle of it, like a small island." It's pretty fascinating how the number of graves matches the exact number…

Symbolism is used by the narrator to develop the theme. The mahogany coffin contains a symbol used to represent the theme of life and death. The narrator states, " One day I took him up to the barns loft and showed him his casket, telling him how we all had believed he would die." The coffin represents death, as the narrator points out. Doodle and his disabilities are symbolic to the…

Dreams are the paints of a great artist, and the world is their canvas. Artists are able to produce beautiful art pieces using their ideas and imaginations. Through art, we are able to communicate stories of tragedy, peace, hardship, and ease. In many ways, visual art and written stories can be compared to one another. Like a frame to a picture, the techniques in a short story help keep the story together. As for the elements they can be seen as the painting itself, providing both story and beauty. Both techniques and elements play crucial roles together. In both short stories “The Blues Merchant” and “Rich For One Day”, the influence of the ironic technique towards characterization and theme can be noticeably seen.…

I chose to use the formalist approach when reviewing this story. This approach takes a look at the literary work itself and uses form and development as its’ main focus. Writers use literary tools the same way an artist would use different colors of paint. Writers use these tools to create representations of things they believe have great importance in their stories. This approach allows you to really get into the meaning of a story. You are able to begin to break-down the stories and discover what techniques the writer used, and what they were trying to express by using those literary tools.…

In the film Rashomon, a 1950 Japanese crime mystery movie directed by Akira Kurosawa, presents truth and honesty of human beings as its central themes. Containing an arsenal of symbols, the film describes a crime incident through different perspectives from the characters related to the happening, and the movie starts after the incident has already taken place. In the beginning, it leads off with three main characters – the woodcutter, the priest, and the commoner – sitting under Rashomon, a worn down temple, as a shelter protecting them from the thunderstorm. Confused and terrified, the woodcutter reluctantly recounts the story of the murdered man to the commoner, and the priest later adds to the story. After a series of severe struggling of the woodcutter, the movie suddenly brings in a very obscure, optimistic ending. With that in mind, the significance of the ending could only be decoded once the audience first identifies the effect of perspectives and symbolism.…

“It is through symbols that man consciously or unconsciously lives, works and has his being.” (Thomas Carlyle). Symbolism is used all around the world. This is a way to communicate beyond the limits and explain some things in a whole new different way. The author Doris Lessing uses this type of figurative language in her story “Through the Tunnel”. This is particularly evident in the settings such as the beach, the bay and the tunnel, which represent different stages in life.…

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is a very moving and captivating novel that uses a variety of symbols and the technique of imagery to convey important messages and ideas. This is why I chose to have multiple symbols present 2 major themes in my mind map. Firstly, I chose to depict a women’s struggle against the oppression placed upon them. I did this by placing a shovel in my mind map in order to symbolize the protagonists, Mariam’s and Laila’s own fight against oppression. In this case, Mariam uses the shovel to once and for all end the abuse that both she and Laila have suffered by the hands of Rasheed. When he begins to physically abuse Laila, Mariam takes a shovel kills Rasheed. After doing so, Laila and Mariam dig a hole in the backyard and bury Rasheed there, explain the corpse underneath the shovel. By doing this, she symbolizes that though she may not have had a choice of her oppression, she still has the power to end it.…

Foreshadowing can be overlooked when reading through a story the first time. It is not until one goes back and re-reads a story after knowing the ending that they can truly see the signs along the way. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor has an unexpected ending but it comes as less of a surprise if the reader pays attention to the details in the story. In this particular story, O’Connor describes the way grandmother dresses, the graves, and the automobile that the Misfit drives. Those details may seem innocent during the first read-through but they are not missed when one realizes, at the end, their true meanings.…

When I first read this story in elementary school, I never saw the true meaning behind the words written by Henryk Sienkiewicz. This novel didn’t really mean too much to me then, mostly because I never understand the deep importance of the point hidden behind this story. Now, after many years I finally realized what Sienkiewicz was trying to tell us in his novel. And I was so surprised how such a short story, which could be read in several minutes, can be so powerful. There are so many meanings and symbols hidden behind author’s words and behind his novel. I really envy Sienkiewicz for his talent. I personally believe that there is no other writer who could take a long story and then condense it into a short novel with so many messages hidden behind his words. His images of nature are simply unbelievable. It made me feel like I was right there on the lighthouse with the main character of the story.…
