While many will agree that Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is critically acclaimed to be one of the most entertaining and well-liked pieces that he has written, there tends to be a discrepancy over how the characters in the play are portrayed when it comes to the importance of gender roles. After reading James C Bulman’s article over the Globe’s more recent performance of Twelfth Night and Shakespeare’s original written version, I realized that there are many ways that this famous piece has been portrayed and each has its own pros and cons.…

Sweeney Todd is a brilliant blockbuster that hit ULM. The musical drama contained an abundance of spine-chillers, laughs, and murders. My first intuition that I first experience about Sweeney told was that it would simply be an old-fashioned musical drama with a cluster of individuals spruced up and singing boisterously. Be that as it may, Sweeney Todd genuinely took my intuition and tossed it in the garbage can. Sweeney Todd was superb and of much a delight to watch. The cast made a magnificent showing by showcasing their parts and singing. The nature of the execution at ULM was really Broadway-commendable. The stage nearness of the execution was totally remarkable even between the progressions of scenes. The cast sang and strolled the phase…

“Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is a well known play and musical capturing the audience’s attention as to what can happen behind closed doors. I will be reporting the background context of the musical and how Victorian life could influence the storyline and characters. I will cover historical, social, political, economical, cultural and technical aspects of the musical. “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (which I will now refer to as “Sweeney Todd”) originated from a play by Christopher Bond, then a musical with a book. The music and lyrics for the musical was written by Stephen Sondheim and was first performed in 1979. The book was written by Hugh Wheeler. “Sweeney Todd” is set in Victorian London, primarily Fleet Street. The main characters are; Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Nellie Lovett, Judge Turpin, Beadle Bamford, Johanna, Anthony and Tobias (Toby). The themes of “Sweeney Todd” are mainly love and revenge but other themes are underlying throughout the story. To start reporting my research I will discuss the historical findings and its origins in greater depth.…

William Shakespeare's Macbeth, and Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol parallel each other on many levels. Macbeth is a play that describes the rise and fall of a ruler who believes nothing can harm him, so the lead character, cleverly called Macbeth, attains power whenever possible, not caring who he hurts or what he destroys in the process. A Christmas Carol is also about the rise and fall of a town leader, the richest man in town, Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge's hunger for wealth and power is illustrated and the reader can see how an too much ambition can plague a man until it's too late. Both Macbeth and A Christmas Carol are similiar because they show how the hunger for wealth and power can destroy lives, whether it's in Shakespeare's time, of Dickens'.…

Leading a double life, he acts as a fool of an English lord in order hide the fact that he is really a cunning, elusive man who goes by the name “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” When using this name to do his good deeds, Sir Percy risks his life in order to rescue French aristocracy. Everyone regards The Scarlet Pimpernel as a hero– he has all the characteristics of a hero about him, and they are very strong in his personality. Sir Percy is also very good at disguising his hero’s true identity, although he did have rather oblivious people around him. He was a hero who did what he needed to do proficiently and did so without unnecessary violence.…

He also says to himself “what about the body? Where would I hide it?” he notices that he has does not have a good place to hide the corpse so he worries about it being found by someone even if he does hide it somewhere. These reasons prove that the barber is cautious and that one should know the consequences of the actions they are about to take. He also considers the fact that “ the blood would go flowing along the floor, warm, indelible, not to be staunched, until it reached the street like a small scarlet river”. He worries about the blood flowing all the way over to the street and being noticed by people. The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orzcy is an intriguing novel that takes place during the French Revolution during 1789 -1799 in France. One of the main characters is Percy Blakeney, who is secretly the scarlet pimpernel. As the scarlet pimpernel he helps condemned French aristocrats escape from the guillotine during the French revolution. His wife, Lady Blakeney, is also a main character in the novel. She is known for her beauty as an actress and for her charisma. Percy Blakeney is the character that I most admire for his bravery, self-sacrificing actions, and his intelligent personality.…

    Great Expectations

In Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, Herbert Pocket describes Pip as "a good fellow, with impetuosity and hesitation, boldness and diffidence, action and dreaming, curiously mixed in him." Although Pip does not agree with this description, I believe Herbert's depiction is accurate. Pip's impetuousness can be seen by his comment, "We spent as much money as we could, and got as little for it as people could make up their minds to give us." (Dickens, 250).This reveals how Pip spends his money without considering the possibility of running into a huge debt. Additionally, Pip shows hesitation when he attends his sister's funeral and promises Biddy to return but suspects, "...that I should not come back, and that Biddy was quite right, all I can say is —-they were quite right too." (Dickens, 261). Pip demonstrates boldness when he encounters the second convict and though he is terrified he continues on to find his convict to give him the file and food. He says, "'It's the young man!' I thought, feeling my heart shoot as I identified him. I dare say I should have felt a pain in my liver, too, if I had known where it was." (Dickens, 16). Pip shows his lack of confidence towards Estella when he drops her off to Richmond and says, "And still I stood looking at the house, thinking how happy I should be if I lived there with her, and knowing that I never was happy with her, but always miserable." (Dickens, 247). Furthermore, Pip continues to fantasize about Estella and is thrilled by her presence when he visits Miss Havisham. He admits, "I stammered something about the pleasure I felt in seeing her again, and about my having looked forward to it for a long, long time." (Dickens, 215). In spite of Herbert's accurate description of Pip, I believe that we know more about Pip's inner character than Herbert does at this point because as a reader, we're introduced to Pip's behaviour and feelings from his point of view.…
