Sustainability In Ferny Hills
Sustainability in Ferny Hills
Sustainable cities are cities that can be maintained and preserved for future generations. Some common characteristics of a sustainable city include a small ecological footprint, which is the amount of land that a person or group of people need to provide the necessities of life such as shelter, water, food, energy and transport. Sustainable cities need to address many factors; these include things such as air quality, housing, biodiversity and economics.
Good air quality is important to people’s health, poor air quality is caused by industrial emissions and cars. Air quality depends on many things such as weather, topography and day of the week. Some of the effects of poor air quality are eye irritation and respiratory

The air quality in Ferny Hills is good because we have no big freeways or big trucks that drive through our suburb causing the air to be polluted. Also there are no big industrial factories to release emissions into our air, furthermore Ferny Hills is on higher ground than the city so polluted air doesn’t settle in the suburb. The housing in Ferny Hills isn’t very sustainable because there is little housing choice and most of it is low density, except for a few town houses and a retirement village. Biodiversity in Ferny Hills is good because there are a lots of native trees, parks, reserves and creeks. These provide homes for animals that I have seen myself such as koalas, native birds, possums, snakes and owls. Ferny Hills is governed by Moreton Bay Regional Council. We can tell that it governed correctly because they had a budget of $174 million in 2016/17 and they had a surplus of $60 million which is economically …show more content…
This is all well managed and maintained by Moreton Bay Regional Council. The council also looks after the parks and reserves. The Queensland Government manages the two schools in the suburb Ferny Hills State School and Patricks Road State School. Other facilities such as shopping centres, cafes and a swimming pool are all privately run.
The council develops the Moreton Bay planning scheme which all residents can see and if they have any issues with it, they can talk to their local councillor and make their views known. Individuals can also be sustainable themselves by making changes to their life and house for example, they could have rainwater tanks, solar panels and use public transport more often.
I could change many aspects of my life to improve the sustainability of my suburb such as catching the bus, walking, carpooling or riding to school instead of just going in a car the outcomes of this would be less fuel is used and there is less traffic congestion around the school which is safe for kids. Secondly, I could find sporting facilities that are closer to my house and I could walk there, again this would fuel while also improving my fitness. Lastly I could have my own veggie patch which would allow me to have my own vegetables instead of having to have my fruit and vegetables travel a long distance to my house the outcomes of this would be fuel is saved and there is less

The goal of Sustainable Communities Strategy (SCS) of Plan Bay Area is promoting the accessibility of housing and transportation for needs of future population growth, and also the reduction of greenhouse gas emission. Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) also participate in the plans to approach SCS’s goal through 2040. By Plan Bay Area’s aspects, the Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) requires to Dublin to provide 2,285 affordable housing units for low or moderate-income population to assist the equity and weakness of Dublin. Dublin is more focusing on building a green living environment with city’s natural resources which successfully fulfils the environmental impact from Plan Bay Area. Also, we agree with previous SWOT analysis that Dublin’s plans to push forward with “Livable Built Environment” and “Harmony with Nature” as the city’s strengths. Because of Dublin has a high financial supporting resident’s structure with a preserved natural environment, the city has an advantage over the goal of sustainability for now and future…

We can work with our community and raise awareness about the environment. We can look into the environmental issues in our neighborhood. We can call our local government offices and ask if it has an environmental committee and if there is one we can join the committee and help with issues that are of concern of the local area. We can organize a clean-up at a local park or street, hold a garage sale or better yet hold a street sale and sell unwanted items, this is a form of recycling. We can also consider developing a proposal for funding an environmental program or cause. The future of our world is unknown but with steady development, we can try to guarantee a better quality of life for every living thing by becoming an informed citizen is a key piece in saving our environment possible.…
