Breast cancer is a disease that impacts almost everyones lives, whether it be them personally, or a loved one around them.I'm no exception, i lost my mother to breast cancer when i was very young, and I'm not the only one. With it impacting so many lives, it would make sense that it is a very well known disease with many organizations dedicated to finding a cure. Easily one of the most prominent ones being the Susan G Komen for the Cure organization. This organization is the one with the pink ribbons and other pink paraphernalia. I supported them for the longest time as a kid, going to every cancer walk they have to several years. However as I grew up, i started to do more research int o the organization itself, i realized they aren't exactly …show more content…
The Susan G Komen for the Cure charity undergoes several questionable practices and other underhanded maneuvers for the sake of themselves and not the cure.

A charities use of funds in a "Non-profit" organization, should be towards researching the cure. In the case of Susan G Komen, it was 20.9% research in 2009-2012. the other 79.1 % went towards administrative costs, fund-raising costs, and most importantly public heath education with a whopping 39.1% of all expenses that year. Now thats fine, but you have to realize that includes all other their advertising, such as the ribbons and other pink merchandise, which only 20.9% goes towards cancer research. The charity is less and less about the cure, and more about awareness of cancer. But awareness of cancer isn't going to get us anywhere. But not these pink products aren't on shelves to cure the disease, there there to make the "Non-Profit money". This is shown by the makers of these products donating a percent of the proceeds to charity for a limited time. And after that time is up, you can still buy them and no money spent will actually help cancer patents that

    When feminists first began to bring it to the surface is when it needed awareness. Nowadays, mostly everyone is aware of the reality of breast cancer. Ehrenreich illustrates different ways that breast cancer is objectified such as: teddy bears, bracelets, shopping for a cure, marathons, candle holders, and many other products that one can purchase. The proceeds are sent to cancer funds. These products are a thoughtful way to donate to the cause, but they also make the cancer itself seem like an object.
