It all started when Kane started running for Governor of New York, on the party line of improving the corrupt ways set up by the current Governor of New York, Jim W. Gettys. However, Gettys uses Kane's so called “affair” with Susan Alexander to blackmail him, which ends his marriage with his wife, Emily and this also brings an end to his bid for governor in just one tiny mistake. In that event of the scandal, Charles Foster Kane marries Susan Alexander and commits all his energy into building her career as a grand opera singer, even though she is not even nearly talented enough.…
She was barely eight years old when together with seven of her age mates ,she was handed over to a traditional circumciser who took them through the painful process of FGM.it has been many years since ,and she has accomplished so much in life, but the incident remains fresh in her mind.…
Growing up in an Irish Catholic family who voted republican, Peggy Noonan switched her alliance to the republican party. Just like many young conservatives around her age did, in which was considered a new era in which began with Ronald Regan being elected president. AS a student in college Peggy had different views when it came to the war in Vietnam, even as the editor of the undergraduate newspaper the war didn’t affect her personally.…

I am impressed by Sojourner Truth’s wisdom and the bravery it took to speak those words, at such a tumultuous time. As a woman; particularly, a Black woman, I felt a sense of pride as I read this speech. I don’t think I could be prouder, if I were one of Sojourner’s descendants. For all I know, I may very well be, as 13 of her children were sold into slavery.…
Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) delivers the student address at Harvard Law School’s 2004 graduation ceremony in the movie Legally Blond. In the film Elle is a misguided student who gets accepted into law school upon false pretenses, merely to get back with her ex-boyfriend. He broke up with her because she was not suitable to be a future Senators wife, he claimed she lacked intelligence and only had her looks to depend on. Everyone’s doubt pushed her to stay determined, confident, and come to the conclusion that she does not need a man to justify her life. She also realizes that passion fuels the ability to become successful. This speech is very effective because of the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos used throughout.…
At the Bernie Sanders rally, he used a variety of techniques while presenting to the group. I noticed when he hit key talking points in his argument; he would use his hands that would elicit a stronger reaction from the crowd. He read his audience demographics well by hitting on housing cost, minimum wage and the high cost of tuition (all very important concerns of college students). However, there were some points he made I felt to be confusing. At one point in his speech, he mentioned how Native Americans were taken advantage of in the past. He tried to say that we should follow the Native American’s lessons and live with nature (and not destroy it with fossil fuel and natural gas exploration). It seemed he used a fallacy to connect two…
The introduction is the first impression about the speaker and about the message. These first few moments builds your audience interest, orients the listeners to the speech, and establishes your credibility as a speaker. “ I stand before you today as a…
This summer I read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The story begins with Melinda, the narrator, starting ninth grade. Everyone, even her old friends, won't talk to her. It's later announced that during the summer, Melinda called the police on a party and it got shut down. After this incident, Melinda became the most hated girl in her school. Something horrible happened to Melinda at the party that she hasn't told anyone about. She shuts herself in, withdrawing from school, her family, and any possibility of friendship. The reason that Melinda called the cops in the party was because she was raped. She becomes completely isolated and eventually becomes mute. Melinda’s emotional scar created by her experience leads her to cut class, steal passes, and cut herself. Very few people try to get her out of the shell, except for one of her teachers. At the end of speak, the same guy who raped her at the party strikes again. This time, Melinda says no, and this simple word makes her…
Rhetorical appeals, syntax, and tone drive a piece of writing or speech and create the full effect of the text. The appeals in writing provide connection between speaker and audience. Use of syntax, the word order, influences the effect and overall meaning of the text. The tone, the general attitude of the piece, influences how the reader or audience perceives what is being said. In Amy Poehler effectively utilizes rhetorical appeals like pathos, syntax, and tone (in her Harvard University Class Day Commencement Address, delivered May 26, 2011) to provide light humor, wit, and inspiration to Harvard graduates.…
Throughout the course I delivered speeches on Zombies, Coming of Age Traditions around the World, Leukemia, and Volunteering. Surprisingly, I found it quite easy to relate a majority of these topics to my audience which was satisfying. Audience adaptation was a new concept to me and I never really did it in other speeches, but getting a good understanding of the concept made the transition easy. However, the topic I had the hardest time relating to my audience was the Leukemia speech. It was a topic I wanted to do more research on since my mom was diagnosed, but many of my classmates may not have experienced that making it hard for them to adapt. As a result, I did my best to make the speech as interesting as possible. On the other hand, I…
In America, there used to be unfair laws and regulations regarding labor. Children are put to work in harsh conditions, conditions often deemed difficult even for adults, and are forced to work ridiculous hours. Florence Kelley gave a speech at the National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia on July 22, 1905. In her speech, Kelley uses repetition, pathos, imagery, logos, and carefully placed diction to express how child labor is morally wrong and inhumane.…
Being an introvert herself, Susan Cain managed to write a descriptive book about such a delicate and sensitive topic with the achievement of her goal to get her message across. Researching about the topic in extreme depth and traveling to different places to first understand the topic herself, Cain managed to write this book, following it with another one; Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts, and co-founded the Quiet Revolution (Media Kit). Her extensive research on the topic made its appearance in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic and such other publications (Media Kit).…
The speech titled “A Whisper of AIDS” was given by Mary Fisher on August 19th, 1992 in Houston Texas at the 1992 Republican National Convention Address. Mary Fisher is an American political activist, author, artist and daughter of a wealthy and powerful republican, Max Fisher. Mary Fisher has become an advocate on AIDS prevention and education after she contracted the disease from her second husband. In the speech “A Whisper of Aids”, Mary Fisher uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos to express her opinions about how AIDS is not something to be ashamed of.…
The strength and power that come from extroverts is all the more compelling, however, many people forget of the silent capability of introverts. Now it is time for introverts to take a stand against popular beliefs and quietly demonstrate to the world their abilities that have been cast aside. Instead of risk-taking thinkers being the center of attention, people who put in a large amount of thought will silently rise to the occasion. Although extroversion is the ideal in the western world, introverts also have their advantages, such as innovative and meticulous ability, in the work environment, and are, therefore, just as adept as extroverts in their abilities to rise to higher positions in the work force.…
