Surprise: Yes or No? Some critics have said that, “The problem with surprise or trick endings is that they can only be read once for enjoyment. After you know the secret, these stories lose all interest. In the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, it can be read more than once with more interest. My first example that I ascertained from a second read of the story came to light as the marvelous revelation of character, and how much they contrasted. “‘ Ah, a good homemade /beef stew! There’s nothing better…’ she would visualize elegant dinners with gleaming silver…” This quote makes it evident how contrasting the two main characters start out as at the beginning of the story. The second example to support my thesis reveals that the main character, Mathilde, is very dynamic over the period of time in which the short story takes place. These two quotes “She was one of those pretty, charming young women…” and “She had become the sort of strong woman, hard and coarse…” this shows exactly how throughout the story her personality flips a complete 180, while her husband barely changes any.
The last example I have is of the extreme love that Mathilde and her husband shared. In the quote “Her husband worked in the evenings, putting a shopkeeper’s ledgers in order, and often at night as well, doing copying at twenty-five centines a page” this showed how much he loved her, that he would do anything to help her pay the debt. As you can see, this was a very enjoyable read the second time around.

In “Freddie in the Shade” on page 22 it said, “Freddie lifted it out of its white paper cradle and bit into the sweet goodness” (Ryan). When Freddie was at the bakery he was joyful. The taste of his eclair and the smell of the bakery helped to shape that character trait. On the other hand, in “The Day it Rained Cats” on page 25 it said, “Tears stung my eyes as I slammed the car door” (Park). Sheera felt heart-broken when she was at her house.. Her grandma telling her she could not go to a book signing to see her favorite author not too long before, helped to shape that character trait. In “Freddie in the Shade” and “The Day it Rained Cats” two different settings shape two different character traits for the main…

Characterizing – it is a daily occurrence that many do not realize is taking place. Whether it appears by describing someone’s new hair or explaining a person’s personality, characterization is frequently happening. Yet, representation of an individual does not only take place in the real world, it appears in numerous literary works as well. For example, in the written matters of A Streetcar Named Desire, A Separate Peace, and “Everyday Use”, where character interactions, such as arguing and having conflicting beliefs, bring out strong depictions and central messages. While some readers of these pieces of literature may believe that character interaction shows no relation to theme relativity; a closer inquiry demonstrates that through characters such as Stella and Stanley, Mama and Dee, and Gene and Finny, an…

The portrayal of a character throughout the plot of a short story or novel is essential to the successful picture a reader vividly imagines while interpreting a writer’s text. 1. Contrasts can evoke strong emotions and images in creative writing. Re-read Yusef Komunyakaa’s poem “Facing It” (page 42). Make note of the ways Komunyakaa contrasts ideas and images: white and black, night and morning, stone and flesh, solid and air, movement and stasis, reality and reflection, past and present. These contrasts create a sense of confusion and tension. Write two paragraphs of your own in which you describe a brief fictional scene that is full of contrasts. Make the contrasts meaningful to the character in your scene.…

"..the husband durable, receptive, gentle; the child a tender golden three. The sight of them made her so sad and sick she did not want to see them ever again."(38) This reveals to the readers that the woman is resentful of her husband's strong health and her child's young age thus, begrudges them as her own life is depreciating. This is a good example of the woman's characterization because it describes her physical appearance and thoughts, as it also give the reader a glimpse of the overall tone to the story.…

For example, when Johnny and Pony were brought back to the church by Dallas and they saw the church was on fire, so they ran up there and saved the children and people inside. The author demonstrates real life situations with her writing as she did with the fire. Another example is when the groups had the rumble. If one guy was getting beat up really badly they would go and help fight back, both groups did this. This shows readers that you should have each others backs when they are in dire need.…
