The main purpose of supply chain is to satisfy customer needs and to generate business profits, but for pharmaceutical industry supply chain management is way more complex than that. The key drivers for a pharmaceutical supply chain excellence are speed, flexibility, visibility, responsiveness, costs and safety . The article deals with the complexity of supply chain management in the pharmaceutical industry at the same time it identifies the following four trends that directly influence the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Integrating and aligning key supply chain parameters: such as capacity, inventory levels, and lead times, with market demand. Increasing flexibility: in order to respond to the unstable manufacturing capacity requirements driven by changing demand; companies have started focusing on building the right product supply setup, the right production footprint, and management of strategic supply relationships with contractors to ensure effective utilization of resources across the supply chain.
