Summary Of The Play Cyrano De Bergerac

Love is what’s on the inside, not on the outside Cyrano de Bergerac was a play put on by the Department of Theatre at Michigan State University. I went to see the play on February 19, 2014 with a few friends at the Auditorium on Farm Lane. Cyrano de Bergerac is about a hopeless romantic (Cyrano) who falls in love with the most beautiful girl in town (Roxanne) but his love is not reciprocated. Roxanne is much more interested in another man (Christian) based purely off of what she sees on the outside, his stunning looks. When Roxanne tells Cyrano about her feelings for Christian, Cyrano agrees to keep Christian safe, which inadvertently turns into Cyrano acting as a matchmaker for the new romance. Because Cyrano is somewhat of a puppeteer behind this budding relationship, I believe that the theme of the play is “love is blind.” Roxanne thinks she is falling head over heels for Christian when in reality Christian is just a pretty face and Cyrano is really the heart behind their love.

Roxanne is devastated that she lost the love of her life but Cyrano is there to coddle her for many years to come. Cyrano never told her his secret until the climax of the play when Cyrano gets hit in the head and suffers a fatal injury shortly after telling Roxanne that he was in fact the one behind their love. This all ties into my theme because Roxanne had what she was looking for the entire time but because of Cyrano’s giant nose and overall unattractive appearance, she never even considered him an

A Midsummer Night Dream is a play written by the late William Shakespeare. This play is about a love triangle how one loves the other when the other does not like them until finally it all ends in a resolution, as they have a secret fairy world looking over at them, this play is almost like a mix between the fantasy world and the real! Bottom is one of the characters in this play, and in this play Bottom is a humorous and confident character, although being intelligent in other fields Bottom is not a very clever or educated man. Bottom and his fellow workmates are named the “rude mechanicals”, unsophisticated men but rather great tradesmen, working not with the mind but with the hands, though Bottom may be labeled a “rude mechanical” in many…

At the beginning of the play, Roxane only noticed Christian because of his looks, and in hopes of making him her soul mate, assumed that he would be eloquent and intelligent as well. Christian, who was neither, needed Cyrano’s help to win Roxane’s love; in return, Cyrano wrote a fleet of romantic love letters for him. This highlights how judging others by their appearances can make us falsify our identities. However, when the truth was revealed to Christian that Cyrano truly loves Roxane, he realized that he wasn’t able to live up to her expectations, and as a result from heartbreak, killed himself. Fifteen years later, Roxane realized this truth as well; that Cyrano was the one who wrote the letters, and that he was the one who truly loves her. If they truly understood each other, Christian wouldn’t have died, Roxane wouldn’t have sacrificed her elegant life to be a nun, and Cyrano wouldn’t have died alone. In conclusion, through horrible consequences, Rostand reminds readers to strive to understand individuals’ identities, and not judge them by their appearances…

In Rostand’s play, Cyrano experiences many tragedies, but seems to have a positive view on them. In other words, Rostand’s play may be more of a tragedy, but it's witty and heroic character seems to make it seem like a heroic comedy. Cyrano may not be in a better situation at the end, and he may not have gotten exactly what he wanted, but by focusing on Cyrano’s point of view, Rostand was able to make his harrowing film seem less disappointing. Even though the idea of a comedic story usually involves a main character who triumphs over evil and wins the day, not all stories that are considered comedies follow this trend. Sometimes, a tale may be seen as a tragedy, but the actions and personality of the characters in it are what makes it a comedy.…

In the beginning of scene V Roxane come up Christian to talk to him. Christian was nervous and didn't know what to say but I love you over and over. I like this part because Christian did not know what to say to her like Cyrano do of how he express his love in sentence and in the delightful ways like Roxane would had thought like as in the letter's. Then later on in the scene Christian had know that he had made a mistake of what he said to Roxane and that she wasn't very happy about it. So when Cyrano had heard what happen from Christian he had to came up with a plan.…

Cyrano didn’t realize it, but Roxane was in love with him almost the whole story because she loved every single letter that he wrote. Cyrano inspires people to help others in order to make your first priority as happy as they can be. Even though Cyrano didn’t come out and confess his love to Roxane right away, he still found a way to tell her how he feels even if she doesn’t know it. If Cyrano kept in his feelings he might have exploded or something similar to that, so it inspires people to let out their feelings to someone or something because it is relieving to just talk about feelings. The way Cyrano acts and talks is very professional which makes him a great role…

Though the original Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand was adapted into the movie Roxanne by Steve Martin, the differences between the two are countless. When watching the movie, the viewer can find that many of the unnecessary details of the book are taken out or altered, while the “skeleton” of the story remains mostly in tact. Despite some exceptions, both the viewer and reader receive, as should be expected from a movie interpretation, essentially the exact same story, however their overall experience after reading Cyrano de Bergerac and watching Roxanne are very much different in many aspects.…

Cyrano demonstrates personal bravery throughout the play in many different circumstances. Particularly, he shows personal bravery through how he demonstrates honor. An example of this is when he agrees to help Christian win over Roxanne, a very beautiful woman, with their joint actions. Christian says,” What would I not give for eloquence!” Cyrano responds by saying, “I’ll lend you some! Lend you…

During these fifteen years Roxane mourns the loss of Christian nonstop and Cyrano visits her every day at the same time. This showed us a more developed character for Roxane because she did not just move on from Christian and we see that she might not be as shallow as Rostand makes her out to be in the beginning. Cyrano also continues to prove his honorable nature by not confessing his love for Roxane and not tarnishing her last memories of Christian. The main aspect of the interactive oral that stood out the most to me was the opening scene and how Cyrano was introduced into the play. We were first exposed to Cyrano while he is still off stage. All of the other characters build up Cyrano’s reputation through speaking of him like he is a legend when Montfleury defies Cyrano’s rules as if Cyrano is still in control of the situation without even being present. Cyrano’s voice then echoes out of nowhere while he makes his appearance at the theatre. All aspects of the interactive oral made the student examine closer on the knowledge they have already obtained and creates a broadened perspective on Cyrano de…

The first illustration of sacrifice in this play is seen when Nora describes the sacrifices she has made in order to pay her debt: "Every time Torvald gave me money for new clothes and such, I never used more than half; always bought the simplest cheapest outfits." (Ibsen 977). This act of frugality shows how Nora will go to great lengths so that she can secretly pay the money she owes for Torvald's trip. While Cyrano sacrificed his life, which is a physical aspect, Nora chose to sacrifice something material such as clothing for her love of Torvald. Later, Mrs. Linde explains to Krogstad why she had to leave him: "Don't forget, I had a helpless mother and two small brothers. We couldn't wait for you, Nils…" (1005). Mrs. Linde, who gave up the man she loves to provide for her family, proves that she will give up her own love so that others can be happy. This is similar to Cyrano, who also suppresses his love so that others could find happiness. Finally, when Torvald and Nora are in the middle of a heated argument, Torvald shows his unwillingness to give up his pride when he exclaims "No one gives up honor for love" (1017). With this simple statement, Torvald exhibits both his dispassionate attitude towards love and the importance of pride to a man of that time period. Unlike Cyrano, Torvald's refusal to sacrifice honor has negative…

Love is a very important subject to Cyrano. Being loved has never happened to him, the need of having some love Cyrano back is a life charm. The love of Roxanne's life is Christian, but Cyrano refers to Christian, " I'll be your cloak of darkness, your enchanted sword, your ring to charm the fairy princess" (p.86). Knowing the fact that Cyrano can't express his emotions from himself, he uses Christian, but at the same time helps him. The soft sweet poetry is coming through Christian but from Cyrano's pleasant words of love. Finally, Cyrano needs to reveal his love for Roxanne but at the end of life. Roxane, the main love interest, plays a major role in how Cyrano thinks of himself, as she consistently reaffirms how important beauty is in society. Cyrano, while trying to make up for his nose in other ways, is constantly reminded of that fact and his unrequited love for Roxane, which will eventually prove to be his downfall. The play ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ has endured for over the centuries precisely because readers still can relate to how grotesque Cyrano’s nose is, which is the persisting struggle in this story. As much as society likes to think that it has changed since the centuries ago in which this was written, beauty is still what many people think of when they make their first impression of…

Kurt Vonnegut Junior’s passage “Harrison and Bergeron” is a brief story written in 1961. It is about Harrison Bergeron, an inmate who is forced to diminish his abilities because they are more enhanced than everyone else’s. When Harrison tries to rebel against the laws of the land, he is shot and killed. “Harrison Bergeron” is similar to “1984”, a book written in 1948 by George Orwell. In “1984” every single leader of society is overthrown by Big Brother and everyone has to conform to the same rules or he or she will be killed, or taken out of society. “Harrison Bergeron” and “1984” have many similarities that give an insight to what is to come in the near future for society.…
