Summary Of Savage Inequalities
The author of Savage inequalities is Jonathan Kozol and this chapters describes life in East St. Louis. East St. Louis is a black community on the Mississippi floodplain. Kozol states that East St. Louis is the most distressed small city in America. The people of East St. Louis are exposed to the burning garbage and foul chemicals from nearby industries. The people are also exposed to toxic waste, raw sewage, and the dangers of lead poisoning. The city, which is 98% black, has no obstetric services, no regular trash collection, and few jobs for the people there. The schools lack qualified teachers, and the schools are so broken-down it would amaze most Americans. This city of East St. Louis is isolated from its wealthy neighboring cities …show more content…
During his first visit Sister Julia stated that the new school was sinking because of the roof was too heavy. According to the Post-Dispatch, Martin Luther King Junior High had been evacuated for the second time in the spring of 1989 because of sewage fumes, backed-up toilets, and sewage in the bathrooms, kitchen, and basement. Kozol discussed the topic of inequalities with students and administrators. He discussed inequalities in classes, with teachers, and with facilities. These black students are required to attend East St. Louis schools without the hope of being transferred or bussed to a better school. As a teacher stated only about 55% of the kids will graduate from school and from this 55%, maybe one out of four will go to college. As Kozol travels through East St. Louis High School, he finds that teachers are not able to teach properly because of the lack of proper materials. The science labs are outdated by at least 30 years, they lack of proper text books/no textbooks, no lab tables, understaffed rooms, etc. In this school a lot of the teachers do not care about teaching anymore and a lot of them are full time substitutes without proper qualifications. Which of course, leads to students not paying attention or not getting any encouragement or the push they need to succeed, or even care about going to, school. Kozol observed in a lot of the classrooms students sitting around talking to other student. In most cases the teachers were not able to teach, or unwilling to even try anymore. This situation is catalyzed by the fact that the diploma offered by the ghetto high schools does not count in the United States job market. It is worth noting that not all students are enrolled in academic programs, nor do they proceed with their college after graduation. Of the 55 graduates, about 20 percent go through four year colleges. 10 percent got to class while 10-20 percent gets to higher education and an equal number join the military. The students in the class complain of unequipped labs, fault typewriters, dirty toilets, inadequate teachers and ignorance by the state as compared to other parts of America. Jennifers views on schools in poor area (Bronx East St. Louis) Jennifer notes that schools in these poor areas are hell, and that is the reason they moved. She argues that people in such areas must take the initiative of changing their lives and the levels of education in their schools. She does not support the idea of taxes from the rich states being used to improve the education status in the poor areas because these areas considered as poor have capabilities to improve the educations standards in their schools. However, she supports the fact that students from both the poor and rich areas should have the opportunity to take the same courses. Schools in poor regions must be equipped with the same facilities as those found in wealthy regions to provide equal opportunities for students. Contrast East St Louis with the school in Rye, New York Schools in Rye, New York, are far much better than the schools in East St Luis both in terms of infrastructure and student composition.     Lower Richmond is a school that educates from kindergarten to fifth grade. Nothing spectacular comes from this school, as it as just an ordinary elementary school. The school is surrounded by racially segregated neighborhoods. The city is home to many workers. But these workers do not survive off career made jobs, but do off daily tasks. Even though Lower Richmond is trying to thrive, its academic system struggles greatly. The chapter continues to speak of other schools in the area that has predominantly black students.     In Fremont, students are forced to deal with squalor conditions and absurd rules. The staff, students, and even Kozol see no reason as to why it should be this way. The reason is brought to light with a discussion between students, which Kozol instigated. Mireya, a bright young girl at Fremont, confessed to Kozol that she did not want to go to the factory to sew like her mother but wants to go to college. A student named Fortino chimed in telling Mireya that the factory needs people to sew. He tells her that because she's "ghetto" she is already destined to sew at the factory. His words are crude but truthful. Fremont has twenty fewer school days than other schools and sometimes students need to take on part-time jobs just because they need the school credits. The school has more substitute teachers than actual teachers one substitute even saying “Just yesterday I was subbing [for] a substitute who was subbing for a teacher who never shows up,” (721). Many teachers want to teach interesting classes, such as women's studies, but can't because of the classroom shortage.     In this book, written by Johnathan Kohl, we are given a rare and candid glimpse inside the educational system in the city of Boston in the 1960’s. As Kohl describes the treatment that minority students endured at the hands of their teachers, it becomes clear that the title of the book is an accurate depiction of the times. As we read about teachers calling students terrible names and treating minority students with contempt and disgust, it is apparent how the spirit of the students were slowly dying inside. Although this was over fifty years ago, this type of treatment still occurs everyday in schools all over the nation. Whether a child be a minority race, have a learning disability or have behavior issues, it is not uncommon for them to be treated in a way that negatively effects their self esteem, causes them to dislike school and eventually, little by little, takes away their hope. No child should be left hopeless. Everyone needs something to be proud of, whether it be one small talent they possess or just one person who believes in and respects them. It is the job of a teacher to build a child’s self-esteem and self-respect and above all, their hope for the future. Without hope, a child will not aspire or dream. There must be procedures in place to ensure that teachers know what is and isn’t acceptable in terms of interacting with children. I have experienced this first hand in my personal life. My son has Asperger’s syndrome. He can be difficult to handle. Because he misreads social cues he wold often misunderstand what his teachers were asking him and answer incorrectly. He repeatedly told me that his teacher yelled at him and didn’t like him. He wouldn’t even tell them when he was sick because he didn’t want to make them angry.     The Shame of the Nation was written in 2005 by author Jonathan Kozol. In this book he discusses how underprivileged children in lower-income school districts are treated differently than the children in middle-class school districts. The middle-class children have easy access to pre-school but very few children in the lower-classes have access to pre-school. As a result, when lower-classes are finally able to attend school, they are below the grade level set by government, they are forced to deal with overfilled class rooms, unskilled teachers and inadequate resources.
