Summary Of Sammy's Mistake
Sammy, a cashier in a small town A&P store, is working one Summer day when in walked three girls, they were only dressed in bathing suits even tho they are miles from the beach. Sammy was in the middle of ringing up an older ladies, when Sammy made a mistake while he was distracted by the three girls the older lady freaked out. One of the girls, chubby wearing a checkered bathing suit first catches his eye. He then notices the one who is leading the pack of girls. He refers to her as "Queenie". She leads the group of girls around the store with her in a very confidence and poise posture. The three girls prance around the store, to customers jaw opening, shocked faces. People can't believe they are wearing bathing suits to the grocery store, after all those suits belong at the beach. Finally, the manager comes out of his office where he was keeping an eye on his …show more content…
I don't really like how bland the story was, it was a guy at the grocery store who saw these girls and then quit his job, there was not any excitement behind it. I think the story does an excellent job with details which I really liked and made the story more interesting. Like Sammy I also work at a grocery store. Like his experience with the older lady how she was waiting for him to make a mistake so she could jump on it and freak out and make him feel guilty. People come into Shaws all the time with their mistakes and usually they aren't happy about it. Also I remember this one lady who hands me one coupon at a time to make sure they scan in right and she will have about 30 coupons. Instead of just letting you know you have made a mistake usually they freak out and say how they can't afford to pay anymore and tell you their story about how every penny counts and how if it is a few pennies off they will make you change it or take it off. As I felt embarrassed at the moment because there were other customers around, Sammy might of felt the same

The short story “A&P” was written by John Updike in the mid-1950’s about a young man trapped in a planned middle class lifestyle that he wanted out of. During this time in history most teenagers around Sammy’s age were responsible for earning a living to support their families. Sammy is a young man who works in a grocery store in the same small town of which he grew up in. One day, during one of his hot summer shifts three young women walked in the grocery store. Following their arrival, Sammy began to notice how they were dressed. He noticed they were in revealing clothing like they were going to enjoy themselves a day at the beach. Not being accustomed to seeing this type of dress from women in particular, it drew a great…

My mom and I sat in silence as I reminisced about my experience. The day had started with me needing to finish one of my numerous yearbook assignments. The usual assignment was going to the football game to take pictures, but this weekend I had to visit the local museum to finish my page. This page needed historical pictures from one of my town’s popular events, the square-dancing revue. Square-dancing has been in Lamar for close to one hundred years and my yearbook page was focusing on the history of it. Most to all of these historical pictures belonged to the museum. I was prepared to be bored out of my mind while taking the pictures, but I wanted an A in the class, so I willed myself to go. I walked up to the building, put on my most believable fake smile, and told myself just to get the job done already. I pulled open the extremely heavy door and quietly snuck up the stairs to the main floor. At this point I was prepared for an overly peppy woman to pop out from nowhere and bombard me with multiple questions about why I was there, instead I found two women reading 1950’s newspapers while drinking coffee. Once they noticed my presence I told them the basics of…

He didn’t like the work, but he needed the occasional and sparse paychecks. Throughout the course of Sammy’s job at the A&P, he noticed and observed many different types of interesting people. One day, in the midst of Sammy’s monotonous pounding of cash register keys at his check-out slot; his eyes wandered off and gazed at three striking young girls that walked into the A&P.…

As the story continues, Sammy curiously watches the provocative young ladies as they stroll through the store looking for groceries. In this fictional story, Sammy describes all three noticeable ladies, the main girl, "Queenie" he describes her as the leader of the two other girls. The second young lady he described was the chunky one; he fully described the chunky girl from head to toe, because Sammy had more descriptive words regarding her appearance. The third girl was the taller of the two. She was not as striking as the other two young ladies. The girls were barefoot and wore bathing suits, which is why they caught Sammy's attention. The reason being not because of the bathing suits they were wearing, but the way they strolled down the isles with confidence as they walked through the store. These young ladies were, "The kind of girls that other girls think are "Striking" and "Attractive." (48) Updike wants to let the reader know these girls wanted attention and only attention; by the way he described what they were wearing and how they flaunted themselves.…
