Everyone knows the age old expression, “if you want something done right, you will do it yourself”. This couldn't be more true in the case of Joe Kurmaskie, in his essay Rough Road Ahead: Do Not Exceed Posted Speed Limit, he learns this lesson the hard way. Armed with all the necessary equipment and knowledge he needs he foolishly takes “travel advice from a collection of old timers”. Another valuable piece of advice for joe could have been “stick to what you know” but the old men seemed “so sure of themselves when pointing out landmarks and sporting off towns. “With age comes wisdom” but the supposed shortcut the aged men tell of only accentuate the fluidity of the world that left them behind.

He had put a few pebbles into his mouth since he had read read somewhere that they would keep his mind off of thirst. Sarcastically he says “With any luck I’d hit a bump and lodge one in my throat” he hasn't given up yet but it didn't seem bad to just get it all over with, quick and painless.

He started on again, away from the “abandoned factory of juice and dreams”, with descending hopes and gains in elevation it was all he could do. As he rounded a bend his outrageous misfortune was behind him. “GARY AND WILBERS FISH CAMP - IF YOU WANT BAIT FOR THE BIG ONES WE’RE YOUR BETS BET” The sign read, “and the only bet” Joe thought. He made his way into the shop and found a rather modern bathroom, no rusted water pump or abandoned heap of plumbing but a fully operation sink from this century that produce cool clean water on demand.

When asked if he knew the best way to get to Yosemite by and old man behind the counter he's said yes and made sure to let him know that he owned a vary good map. After the days trial he would always stick to it in the future. No mater how temping another option is sticking to what oneself knows will yield the best result.
