Summary Of Fredrik's 5 Paragraph Essay
Fredrik deBoer expressively sates in this article that he is against the five paragraph essay, claiming that “sometimes these forms have negative unintended consequences, and their weaknesses outweigh their benefits” (deBoer). Fredriks main purpose is that the five paragraph essay isn’t as beneficial as people believe it to be. He wants to get it across that this format of writing won’t connect and help with the real world.

To reinforce his statement deBoer gives examples of how this form of writing has no correlation with education beyond K-12. “Another reason to oppose the five paragraph essay is that these tasks bear very little resemblance to the writing tasks most students will have to undertake at work and in college” (deBoer). The 5-Paragraph essay is an excellent structure to consider “the basics”. One introduces, discusses, and then wraps it up!” (Pyle 14). This model gives students an idea on how to organize ideas into well-written paragraphs because it’s easy to follow, the better an individual gets at the basics, the better writers they become. The 5-paragraph essay structure has made it easier to get my ideas in order and give readers an idea of where I stand on an issue which is very essential when it comes to writing.…

At the beginning of the course I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was my first year in college and my first English class of the year. In High school, English classes worshiped the 5 paragraph essay format, and this format spontaneously disappeared in English 101. Instead of the 5 paragraph format, we were introduced to writing about the text instead of the topic. Our papers weren’t structured as 5 paragraphs as much as length in pages. The texts we were introduced to were focused on rhetorical analysis. Rhetorical analysis is an essay that breaks down a work into pieces and explains how these pieces fit together to give off a certain effect, such as persuasion. The papers we were doing were are interpretative but based on rhetorical analysis.…

Based on my experience of writing, writing a five paragraph essay was the key success of writing the perfect essay. But in the essay “Breaking the Five-Paragraph Theme Barrier” by Thomas Nunnally, we are told that writing a five paragraph essay was to help “ learn the principles of effective composition, principles that can be applied to any writing task, not to master a single format that will answer all their writing needs.” (70-71) In other words, learning to write in this format helped students understand the different elements in an essay such as transition sentences and a thesis statement. These elements could also be applied to other styles of writings too, but most students do not realize that, since they are focused on following the…

The following paragraphs will illustrate my opinion of White’s idea, if I think it is an effective means of writing a paper, and if I believe it should be the way all papers, essays, and reports are written. Lastly I will finish up with an overview of what I have discussed.…

Many people, when tasked with an essay, will groan and procrastinate. However, in my case, I rather have that assignment over anything else. I love to explain things, why I know them to be true, and how they work. Additionally, I enjoy journaling about my day to day experiences, fleshing out how I could better myself and handle problems differently. I see writing as a creative outlet — not a task to be checked off. Although I loved a good book when I was little, my recent love for literature springs from my experiences this past school year in AP Language and Composition. I took this class a year early in order to participate in AP Capstone. I enjoyed getting to explore and discover the true meaning behind the words they wrote.…
