Summary Of Alan Gratz's Refuge
In Refugee by Alan Gratz, "Sacrificing oneself is the ultimate act of love" is a dominant theme in the last chapters. On page 277, the text states, "A calm came over Lito, as though he'd come to some sort of understanding, some decision. I see it now, Chabela. All of it. The past, the present, the future. All my life, I kept waiting for things to get better.... It didn't. It didn't. Because I didn't change it... Don't stop rowing for shore! Isabel's grandfather yelled at everyone else. He kissed Isabel on the cheek, surprising her, and then stood and jumped into the ocean. "(Gratz) This proves his love for his family and his idea of his family being safe in the US, even without him. His family reaches Miami because Lito distracts the Coast

In Veronica Roth’s novel Allegiant, love can be shown through sacrifice, even if it means leaving those you love. Right before their plan to obtain the memory serum, Tobias explains to Tris: “They (The Abnegation) say that if the sacrifice is the ultimate way for that person to show you they love you, you should let them do it… That, in that situation, it’s the greatest gift you can give them.” (Roth 412) Then the realization hits Tris that Caleb, her brother, volunteered for the deadly mission to get the serum out of guilt, not love. “I love my brother. I love him, and he is quaking with terror at the thought of death.” (455) Caleb is still holding on to the burden of betraying Tris while he was working for Jeanine Matthews in Erudite…

    * “Sometimes a character in literature makes a deliberate decision to sacrifice himself for the good of others” This quote means that people may face challenges and situations, in which they must sacrifice their own needs and wants for the benefit of others. In the book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, McMurphy sacrifices himself for the other patients in the ward. Kesey uses many symbolic references to show McMurphy sacrificing himself, just as Jesus Christ did for his own disciples. Many events occurring in the book depict McMurphy as a Christ like figure.…

An example of this is when Mr. Frank and his family barely moved in, Mr. Frank showed compassion towards the Van Daans by offering them a place to stay. Mr. Frank did the same thing with Mr. Dussel, even though he didn’t have any more room in the Annex, he had the compassion to take him in and figure a way that made him comfortable. In this example, it shows that instead of having all the room for himself, Mr. Frank had the compassion to give the Van Daans and Mr. Dussel a place to hide. In the Annex, Mr. Frank sacrificed a lot for his family as well as the rest of the residence staying with him too. As it says in dictionary.com the word sacrificed defines as “an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy”.…

In Ann – Marie Macdonald’s Fall on Your Knees, James and his family sacrifice important things that they desire or want for the sake of their family. Through the use of characterization, symbols and diction, Macdonald shows that healthy sacrifices benefit everyone. Similarly in Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Sacrifice is shown throughout the play for the benefit of self or others that they love or want. This is also shown by Shakespeare by using the above elements, which proves that the sacrifices that are made for the benefit of everyone will lead to the happy…

    | SacrificeThe novel contains sacrifice from the mentioning of the quote;“Had I right, for my own benefit, to inflict this curse upon everlasting generations? I had before been moved by the sophisms of the being I had created; I had been struck senseless by his fiendish threats; but now, for the first time, the wickedness of my promise burst upon me; I shuddered to think that future ages might curse me as their pest, whose selfishness had not hesitated to buy its own peace at the price, perhaps, of the…

Just because you’re life seems difficult now, doesn’t mean you should give up now. I believe everyone goes through a struggle in life, whether it be money, addictions, sadness or overall stress. Life is difficult but I think everyone should seek happiness and truth and while discovering what that means to you, you never give up. “I came into this world, not chiefly to make this a good place to live in, but to live in it, be it good or bad” (Thoreau, Henry D., “Civil Disobedience”).…
