Typically cross-country-roadtrips are perceived as a side effect of adolescent impulsiveness, but not in Colin’s case. In An Abundance of Katherines, the main character, Colin, was a child prodigy. As he grows, and continues in college, he struggles to maintain that status. After a rough breakup, he is convinced by his friend Hassan, to go on a sojourn over the summer. Over the course of their journey together, Colin In An Abundance of Katherines the search for meaning, love, and knowledge are by far the most important.

In his search for meaning, Colin is constantly struggling. As a child, he was proclaimed a prodigy, and is constantly trying

Between his mannerism and habitual traits, Colin’s search for love has been a tentative one. He has dated 17 girls with the same exact name. His first and most recent girlfriend were the same girl, and by far the most important to him. The first time they were together was over the duration of 3 minutes, and the most recent was for almost an entire year. Over the course of that year he learned to break free of his meticulous manner of thinking, but not enough to keep the relationship afloat. He spent months searching for her love before dating her the second time, and once he found it he was utterly smitten. Her love an insidious parasite, embedding itself discreetly into every aspect of his life. (smiley, metaphor) After the break up, Colin felt as if he were missing a piece without her. The search is key to Colins growth as a person. Earlier on in his life, the searches were much simpler, like interviewing applicants to fill a simple job. (smiley, simile) Later it develops into something obsessively rational, “Love is graphical! (Green 43)”. Colin, desperate to validate the feelings consuming him, attempts to create The Theorem. The Theorem being a mathematical equation expressing how love works, and predicting the aftermath of it. Later in the novel the exceptions of his Theorem begin to dawn on him, which is crucial to his perspective broadening. With his changed perspective he can enjoy …show more content…
What he finds on his somewhat juvenile roadtrip becomes so much more than materialistic momentos. He grows as a person to see a side of life he previously turned a blind eye to. (smiley, full circle)

I would like to give myself an A on this journal because I put my best effort forth. I spent three times as much energy and time on this compared to my last journal. Most of which spent of re-reading, double checking all the handouts, and writing an outline.

In the book, An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, Colin Singleton experiences many emotional and mental changes. In his recent song, “Sign of the Times,” Harry Styles sings about how one must not dwell on the past: “We gotta get away from here.” (Styles L18.) The message that Styles works to deliver is that while it can be tough to take something special off of one's mind, they must try to forget about the past. The quote from “Sign of the Times” relates to the quote from An Abundance of Katherines because in the beginning, all Colin could think about was his relationship with K-9.…

Christopher embarks on a challenging journey to London which acts as a symbolic rite of passage, as he successfully transitions from a boy needs help completing everyday task for the normal person to someone who can independently complete a task beyond his limitations. Christopher had to endure thirst and hunger while he was in a state of confusion while waiting for a train. I felt sympathetic towards him, feeling both worried but at the same time a sense of reverence towards Christopher for his determination to go to London to meet his mother.…

In the book “An Abundance Of Katherines" by John Green I found that the most intriguing character was Lindsey Lee Wells. In the book Colin Singleton had only dated girls named Katherine and he had dated nineteen of them. Colin is the main character of the book and he is a prodigy. A prodigy is a person, especially a young one, endowed with exceptional qualities or abilities. At the beginning of the story colin breaks up with his nineteenth Katherine and, is very heartbroken. Since he is so heartbroken his best friend Hassan has a idea that they should go on a road trip. During the road trip Colin and Hassan make a stop in a town called Gutshot, Texas. They go inside of a general store that Lindsey worked at. After meeting Lindsey and talking with her a while Colin and Hassan decide that they would stay in Gutshot for a while. They stay in Gutshot because they…

“I'm so blessed. The challenges of my past have made me immensely strong inside. I adapted quickly, learning how to survive from a bad situation.I learned the secret of internal motivation. My experience gave me a different outlook on life, that others may never know”, page 86. This quote opens up a whole new meaning compared to the rest of the book. It shows a drastic change on giving up from before to being fortunate to being a whole new person again. From having no one to hold his hand throughout the years, Stephen his son, having him maintain his dignity and wiping away his tears. Nothing is more better to Dave than knowing that he had finally let go of what was no longer good to him on his mental and physical health. Learning is a big…

Kipnis maintains her resolve with an apt allusion that “the expression of needs” is often the Trojan horse of intimate warfare, since expressing needs means, by definition, that one’s partner has thus far failed to meet them.” (Par.24). She uses allusion to define “modern love’s central anxiety, that structuring social contradiction the size of the San Andreas Fault: namely, the expectation that romance and sexual attraction can last a lifetime of coupled togetherness…”(Par.3). Her main point here is to create descriptions that pull you into her perception of love’s…

In A.B Yehoshua’s novel,The Lover, a chain of first person monologues are described. These monologues are set up in a mixture of flashbacks and conflicts that the characters undergo. This unique structure gives the novel a special meaning towards its description of the characters, and the story itself. For example, the character Asya is described to be a very hardworking independent woman. But, she has a odd relationship with her husband, Adam, who is a diligent man in charge of a successful mechanics garage. Throughout the story Adam and Asya never, hug never kiss, and they barley speak to one another. Meaning that this structure lets The Lover symbolize the loneliness and insufficient amount of recognition towards each of the characters. For instance, Daffi, the daughter of Asya and Adam, is a teenage girl in lack of attention. So, because of her parents barely paying any type of attention to her, she spends her time wandering the streets most of the day trying to keep herself productive by either stalking people or just walking around. After awhile, she then begins to connect with her fathers worker, Na’im, who also is alone and has no attention from anyone, and in the end they both fall in love. This basically shows how this novel details the meaning of loneliness and the importance of love.…

On the other hand my interpretation of what I read was that this essay is about loves meaning, the different aspects of love and how you have to work to keep love alive. In one of Kipnis’s other essays “Against Love” Kipnis suggests, “Love is, as we know, a mysterious and controlling force. It has vast power over our thoughts and life decisions. It…

This book was overall very interesting, moving, and inspiring. It shows readers the struggles that others have in their lives, it shows what it means to truly live their life and it shows life from a different point of view, a life that most people wouldn’t even think about or take into consideration. Readers learn that life is short, difficult, and sometimes has more challenges than one would think, but in the long run, it’s all worth it.…

If asked, “what grade do you deserve in this class thus far,” I would respond with “an A”. In a class where writing, a subjective skill to grade, is a primary source of your grade, I believe grades should be given based off of improvements in their skill rather than their final ability. Due to this Ideology I believe I would best deserve an A this quarter because I have shown major improvements in my writing.…
