Oats-No Sir, there will be none of that! Our main export is flour and we have abundance in wheat. We are often called the “breadbasket” colonies.

Between 1660 and 1775, Great Britain’s North American colonies were affected greatly by race, ethnicity and religion. The first settlers were predominantly white, ethnically, English, and religiously Protestant. The New World was home to many people who sought religious freedom. In addition, the demand of new market and new forces of labor created an opportunity for new races and ethnicities to colonize America. New forces of race, ethnicity and religion show how colonial society was a melting pot compared to any other country in the world. After Queen Elizabeth won the struggle for religious dominance against the Roman Catholics, Protestantism became the main religion in England. Catholics went to the New World to escape religious persecution. Lord Baltimore, a rich catholic, had set out to create refuge for his fellow Catholics so he found Maryland. However, Catholics were not safe from the Protestant immigrants. In 1649, the Act Concerning Religion was passed by the Maryland colony. This act states that no one that believes in Jesus Christ should be in any way troubled or disliked for or in respect to his religion. As seen in Document D, the South is very heavily populated by African- Americans. The reason for this high population was for slavery. Most slaves harvested the cash crop of the South which was tobacco.…

In the Chesapeake colonies many single men that were younger than 25 migrated over to Virginia (Document C). The rich soil brought many farming and agricultural jobs to that area that drew the younger, more fit population to settle in Virginia region. This area was not a family-friendly area because of the vast amount of wars and land to defend going on between the Indians, and the Dutch (Document G). The main pull factor to the southern colonies was the large cash profit from the harsh labor that nobody else was willing to do. This explains why the more work vulnerable young men that were looking for quick cash migrated to this region because of the rich soil and fair climate to grow crops that were much wanted throughout England, New England and middle colonies. Crops that were a huge profit in the seventeenth century included tobacco and rice that flourished in the Chesapeake region.…

The salty wind sent Alice Clark’s hair rushing behind her as the boat pulled closer to the dock of the small land mass only minutes away. From her standing position leaning over the rail, she could see the figures of the few people who inhabited the remote place just off of the coast of Nova Scotia. It seemed they had all shown up to see the tourists getting off of the ferry—the visitors of the day.…

The economics of these colonies varied due to the area in which these colonies were located. Virginian economics were based on a cash-crop industry. This helped lead to the importing of slaves from Africa. Due to this importation of slaves there was a drastic divide in the social structure of Virginia, resulting in a three-layered society. Slaves were at the bottom, small farmers and laborers were in the middle, and wealthy plantation owners were at the top. Society in New England was not nearly as layered. The majority of families occupied what we today call the “middle class”. Although many New England families did own slaves, they typically owned only one or two.…

Religion in the southern colonies was not practiced with the enthusiasm that it was in New England. While most colonists of the south were Anglicans, they were more focused on their tobacco plantations. The same was true for the Catholic founders of Maryland. Every year, my summer consist of my family and I traveling around the states. Boston Massachusetts, was one of the states that built the love and appreciation I have for nature. The Boston Tea Party Museum was located between Congress St and Seaport Blvd. The city its self was appealing. Trees and flowers you’d Normally see on the TV, Big Houses with paintings so bright you think it was painted every-week.The lawns was tidy, plantings and the trees were clipped to purity. Where I was standing, the sidewalks were smooth and clean. No cracks, no unruffled spots. It was the most errorless town I had ever seen. The museum was a long way from the neighbor I was at. The drive didn’t seem like it was half an hour; more like couple of minutes. From…

The New England (Northern) Colonies were extremely set in their ways, especially when it came to the religion that they used; as most know, the Puritans wanted to ‘purify’ the Catholic church. To purify simply means to cleanse something. Then there were the separatists; these were the group of people who just broke away from the Catholic church to come to the new world for religious and spiritual reasons. These people were referred to as Pilgrims anywhere but England.Once they founded the New England Colonies, they made sure of their religion right away. Their set in stone religion was Christianity; everything they did or said was based on the word of God. One of the many beliefs of the Puritans was predestination; this meant that God had…

When the Europeans came to the new world they brought with them wheat, sugar, rice and coffee. The American Indians introduced corn, potatoes, pineapples, tomatoes, tobacco, beans, vanilla and chocolate to the Europeans. According to “The American Pageant” textbook the Europeans were highly affected by the potato crop. The diet of the Europeans was changed when potatoes were brought into the Old World. The potato caused the Old World population to grow quickly.…
