Suffering In Shirley Jackson's Charles
In the story Charles by Shirley Jackson, there is a very poorly behaved boy named
Laurie. I believe his behavior should be blamed on his parents. Laurie is used to giving his parents attitude without any punishment. Since he had his treatment at home, he would feel the same. For example, on page 1 “Laurie slid off his chair, took a cookie, and left, while his father was still saying ‘See here young man”. This might have given him the mindset that he could do the same with the teacher, ignoring her instructions.

From Philips mistakes, we can learn that we have to swallow our pride in hard situations and always tell the truth, even if it hurts, because if we do not do that, then we could hit a lot of people and lose…

In the essay “Variations on Grief”, author Meghan Daum losses a childhood friend unexpectedly. Brian Peterson’s passing had a seemingly small emotional effect on Daum. In fact, she doesn’t even feel the need to cry or be saddened by the sudden loss. Daum goes against the norm of how you’d think one would grieve a close friend. Instead of mourning she “decided to create an ironic occurrence rather than a tragedy” (Daum 157). She goes on with her life as if nothing happens. Daum even begins to lie about the events surrounding Brian’s death. She says that the lies are to help the Petersons cope. For instance, Daum was dishonest about Brian’s commitment to becoming a successful writer. In a way, she also lied about his death. She wouldn’t speak…

Even her own husband prosecutes her and turns his back on her, “Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip out of her hand” (295). Gina Berriault’s “The Stone Boy” is an intricate examination of a family coping with tragedy. In a key passage of the story, Arnold hides out in the barn as his family goes to search for Eugene. Arnold’s physical separation from his family is symbolic of the emotional distance that escalates through the story, culminating in the strained relationship illustrated in the resolution of the conflict. This passage is crucial to understanding the theme of the story which is that while grief presents itself in many forms, comfort and understanding are essential elements in the healing process and if these basic human needs are not met, grief will manifest itself as an isolating and divisive factor.…
