Substance Abuse Meeting Reflection
As I observed this meeting, I found most of the people were very proud to be there and were very interested in what others had to say. The group appeared very close and knew each other very well. I was surprised to hear how the community and one another were so important in each others sobriety. This was the first time I have ever been apart of any type of substance abuse meeting and I now have a great respect for those who have overcome long, hard pasts and are now not only clean but continue to help others.

    I recently attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in a comfortable house in Santa Monica, California. The room was occupied by approximately 70 attendees, and even more sitting on the outside porch. The focus of this particular day’s meeting was step six of the 12-step program. The sixth step is stated as follows: “We’re entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character” (Wilson, 1939, p. 76).     There was the actual group leader Andre, and then there was a woman, Christy, who helped him lead the group and keep everyone on task. She also was the groups contact person, and filled out all the forms for peoples parole officers, help house leaders, etc. Then there were 3 or 4, depending on the night, members who wanted to be in control of the group. Two of them were actually beneficial to the group and provided them with helpful stories and commentary. Then there were the other two who just seemed to want to interrupt the group just to share something they thought was important, but not something that helped the group or went along with the group discussion. I think this was very challenging to the group overall, there was a lot of whispering going on while these members talked, whispers of “someone shut him/her up” “I can’t stand it when he/she shares” etc. I think that the assigned leaders should step up and quiet them down or try and get them into some type of individual counseling. It is a tough situation though because if they are asked to leave the group or quit sharing it may lead to a relapse or them just not attending meetings anymore because they feel unwelcome, and that is not beneficial at all. You could see that the leaders were trying to keep things on track and had subtle ways of trying to quiet a person, but it didn’t always…

    The topic of the meeting was on feelings and emotions which I definitely could relate to. As people discussed their emotions and feelings I started feeling sad for some of them.     They were very welcoming and friendly. When the meeting started a man starting talking about his addiction, how it was ruining his life, and everything he went through to work towards sobriety. He told the group that his last drink was 9 years ago. He was very inspirational and told everyone in the meeting that we are all equals, we do not judge anyone, and to not be ashamed of who you are.
