Child abuse happens daily in society many people are survivors. People where and are abused because their parents couldn’t deal with their responsibilities.…
Often times it is easier to neglect the inevitability of death, but there is no neglecting the further rebuked notion of murder. The world is quite familiar with this utmost evil and shows no tolerance, but when it comes to the instance of a child who has committed the same crime, the rationale of justice is flipped on its head. There are many conflicts to be raised by two major viewpoints. Those who believe that adolescents deserve mandatory life in prison are understandably hurt and angered by their losses, but they disregard the sheer weight of certain particulars. When a juvenile is convicted of such an act, their age and environment in which they were raised prove to be reasonable mitigation for their horrid conducts.…
In 2004, over 517,000 children were put into foster care. Out of this number, at least one-fifth of these children were removed from their homes due to some sort of violence and child maltreatment(Babel, 2011). To these young children, their lives revolve around their parent(s) or the adult-figure in their life. The child depends on them for love and affection, but in some cases, the love and affection in not returned. Childhood abuse and neglect can happen in various situations for various reasons. The abuse can leave long-term effects on the children into adulthood, which includes post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, bipolar and multiple personality disorders. Not only can the children suffer from disorders, they can begin…
People always say that when children are abused that they see nothing but how they were raised, that they will grow up in the same situations, making the same mistakes and abusing others too. Many adults as children are abused and still move live on to…
In this world there are many children who are being hurt and there is a lot of ways this could happen. There are multiple forms of child abuse and all of them leave a deep lasting impression on children. Most people believe that all child abuse is physical but mostly it’s emotional (helpguide.org/). Often physical abuse can lead to emotional scarring to that child which could possibly follow them for a good portion of their lives. When a child is abused physically they can heal and do their best to forget about, but after they are emotionally abused it traumatizes them almost to point where they can never forget about it.…
This can happen because abuse can have a knock on effect in all aspects of a child's life, such as schooling, friends, future relationships and social…
Without this healthy development a child will respond to a positive nurturing environment just as well as they would to a negative one. Child abuse will greatly alter the way a child’s brain develops, thinks, and responds to certain situations. Verbal, physical, and sexual abuse specifically target regions of the brain that deal with those experiences. According to Martin H. Teicher, “Maltreatment is associated with reliable morphological alterations in interior cingulate, dorsal lateral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex, corpus callosum and adult hippocampus.” All specific regions affected by child abuse and its stress (Teicher…
Psychological trauma can have an everlasting effect on a person’s life. According to Armsworth and Holaday (1993), Psychological trauma occurs when an individual is exposed to an overwhelming event that renders him or her helpless in the face of intolerable danger, anxiety, and instinctual arousal (p. 49). Anyone no matter what age, can experience a traumatic event. However, children are the ones mostly affected by a traumatic event. Trauma regardless if it is sexual abuse, physical abuse, or psychological abuse, affects a person’s life. The abuse will alter the way a person thinks, feels, and their ability to cope with the abuse. The human body responds to trauma in different ways. The traumatic experience or experiences can…
Even if both victims suffer from similar kinds of abuse, it depends on the type of abuse, the child’s age and development. For example, an infant that was neglected until the age of 5 can cause psychology consequences. Meaning “the immediate emotional effects of abuse and neglect-- isolation, fear, and an inability to trust--can translate into lifelong consequences, including low self esteem, depression, and relationship difficulties” (CWIG, 9). The child that doesn’t suffer the long-term consequences would have experienced, for example both sever physical abuse and neglect. That would lead to behavioral consequences meaning difficulties during adolescence such as delinquency, poor grades in school and even drug use. For victims that have that ability to cope with those issues is sometimes referred to as “resilience” (CWIG, 4). The “positive and promotive factors may contribute to an abused or neglected child 's resilience” (CWIG4). Positive influences like role models and mentors will encourage the child to open up. Living in a stable community provides “safe schools and adequate health care” (Dedria, 4). With the help from family, friends and even the community can really help to encourage the child to cope with the…
One main problem that often come out of traumatic experiences is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is seen throughout society and is characterized as re-experiencing the traumatic event through dreams, thoughts, sensations, or flashbacks. It also involves emotional numbing, avoidance of trauma provoking thoughts or activities, and a heightened sense of alertness or arousal. PTSD is most commonly seen when the maltreatment was received as a child. Childhood maltreatment comprises of sexual, physical, and emotional neglect that negatively affects a child’s development and their psychological or psychological health throughout their entire lifetime (Ramo-Fernández et al.). When abused at such an important developmental age such as childhood development those children when adults have a higher probability of abusing their own children and becoming involved in abusive relationships, in which they would re-experience their victimization (Ramo-Fernández et al.). A study was done to prove that when one is abused as a child they are more likely to become abusive as well. In 135 parents with a history of childhood maltreatment 6.7% abused their child within the first 13 months. This may not seem like a large amount but compared to the control group of non-abused parents only 0.4% abused their offspring (Ramo-Fernández et…
Researchers also have begun to explore why, given similar conditions, some children experience long-term consequences of abuse and neglect while others emerge relatively unscathed. The ability to cope, and even thrive, following a negative experience is often referred to as “resilience.” It is important to note that resilience is not an inherent trait in children but results from a mixture of both risk and protective factors that cause a child’s positive or negative reaction to adverse experiences. A number of protective and promotive factors individually, within a family, or within a community may contribute to an abused or neglected child’s resilience. These include positive attachment, self-esteem, intelligence, emotion regulation, humor, and independence (Shaffer,…
According to the textbook “Human Development,” emotional abuse or maltreatment is the rejection, terrorization, degradation, ridicule, or failure to give love, emotional support, and affection (p. 207). Emotional abuse can have significant damage to the child’s mental and social development. Some ways parents are emotionally abusive is by constantly telling the child he/she are things like “worthless,” or “no good.” Not showing signs of affection and continuous belittling or humiliation of the child. Even a child being exposed to violence or another individual’s abuse, such as the abuse of a sibling, pet, or parent can have dramatic effects on the child’s development. Children who are emotionally abused may have extreme behavior in their passive or aggressiveness or extremely compliant or extremely demanding. They may also act very adult or infantile (Saisan).…
If a kid were to be abused growing up they would want to try and turn to something else for the attention that they want. I have had friends who have gone through times in which their parents fight at home and when this happens they come to school usually upset and take their anger out other people and turn to violence thus creating the “cycle of violence”. I believe that people that grow up without love and support slowly begin to progress this strong anger each day because they might see people around them having what they have always wanted. Having this said this person would probably do anything to get that attention and would most likely turn to a crime. Parental relations is very important, I grew up with both my parents but many of my friend’s parents live…
In Time magazine, Lawrence J. Cohen writes an editorial titled, The Drama of the Anxious Child. In this article Cohen taps into childhood anxiety and what kind of effect parents have while they grow up. Cohen makes the claim that childhood anxiety is on the rise at every level, “from fears of monsters under the bed to phobias and panic attacks to severe anxiety patterns.” The claim of this editorial isn’t the first thing that Cohen writes, he starts with some statistics about child anxiety. He writes, “Nowadays, there are still 10-20% with that reactive temperament, but the number of children with a diagnosable anxiety disorder has skyrocketed, up to 25% according to the National Institutes of Mental Health.” By doing this, Cohen uses the rhetorical appeal of ethos, or credibly. He then goes into about four main reasons that back up his claim of childhood anxiety rising over the years.…
I love you so much, but you make me so angry almost all the time. it’s like no matter what I try to say or do, it just isn’t good enough for you or what you keep telling me, God. I feel like you’re always trying to make me feel guilty talking about “do you think God thinks this is okay?” or “I will leave you in God’s hands now because I can’t do this anymore.” I understand that you feel like I need to get back into church and get more closer to God, and that I need more religion in my life. But I don’t need bible study, I don’t need to go to church, I don’t need to pray 24/7 to know in my heart how strong my faith is and that I love my Lord and Jesus Christ. I know there is God and a heaven. It’s sad that you convinced yourself so good that I don’t know the bible, and what’s in it.…
