I find writing a very neutral subject because I am not terrible nor excellent at it. I have always written enough for it to be satisfactory. Therefore, I believe that one of my strengths as a writer is being able to understand what I have to write about and knowing what I want to say. I question myself every step of the way, asking myself “ Is what I am writing, answering the topic that I am addressing?” However, with that said, I believe that my weakness lies in that fact that I cannot put my thoughts into words. I have a vast amount of ideas that never get a chance to come alive on paper. I feel that I am not very good at transitions and sentence structures. Another weakness is that it takes me an awful long…

John Flavell of Stanford University is regarded as a foundation researcher in metacognition (Lifecircles, nd). Flavell has been a true inspiration to me as an educator in that we both see the benefits in teaching learners to think about their own thinking. The metacognitive strategy implementation such as self-awareness and self-evaluating is to improve independent readers who can control their own learning and learn, when and how to use those strategies while reading, Flavell (1981). As a writer, there are things that I do well, but there are also things I could improve on to make my writing better. I’m pretty good at getting my point across, and getting people to understand what I’m trying to say. Another thing I’m good at is just writing the paper. Once I get started on a paper it is very easy for me to just keep writing until I’m done with it. However, when doing this I tend to not use the best grammar and be too wordy with my writing. I can definitely fix these issues, and continue to build on the things that I do well.…

parents, peers, etc.), students have the potential to increase their ability to comprehend what they read (McCown & Thomason, 2014; Mahdavi & Tensfeldt, 2013). McCown and Thomason (2014) suggest strategies that assist students in activating their prior knowledge, monitoring their own reading comprehension, determining the main idea, and reviewing what they read are necessary to improve their comprehension skills. When students are instructed on which strategies to use and how to use them, they begin to use their metacognition to select strategies to use as they approach reading (McCown & Thomason, 2014). Over time, students become comfortable using these strategies, and they begin to self-select which strategies work for certain texts, which in turn enhances their comprehension skills (McCown & Thomason, 2014; Mahdavi & Tensfeldt,…
