[pic]Children develop at different rates. While some are naturally late bloomers and some are ahead of the curve, there are things parents and caregivers can do to encourage and support a child's physical development. Developmental Milestones
1. Be aware of the developmental milestones your child has achieved and which ones you should be looking for in the near future. Every age has its own set of milestones, and knowing what they are will help you know what to expect from your child. Avoid pushing your child to do more than he reasonably can developmentally. Some kids are naturally more advanced than others, but you cannot force this to happen. Pushing beyond reason will only frustrate you and your child. Gross Motor Skills
2. Gross-motor skills help children move their whole body from place to place. Encourage your child to move from one place to another by herself from an early age. For babies, putting toys out of reach but within view will encourage rolling and eventually crawling. Toddlers should be encouraged to walk as often as possible as they practice this valuable life skill. Older kids can walk distances, run around a playground or sports field, and climb things. Encourage your child to play outdoors each day, as they are much more likely to run and jump outside than they are in the house. Balance and Coordination
3. Balance and coordination are important to development, but kids achieve proficiency in this area at very different rates. Babies who push up on hands and knees only to rock rather than crawl are practicing these skills. Older kids hone these skills by participating in activities such a gymnastics, horseback riding and martial arts. Activities as simple as playing catch, jumping rope and playing hopscotch also help build balance and coordination. Fine Motor Skills

    Physical development is physical growth of the body. During childhood, physical growth includes gross motor, which are the big muscles, and fine motor, which help gain control of the body. Physical growth patterns start with gross motor development and then fine motor development occurs. At approximately one year old, a baby can walk by itself. By the age of three, a child has shown sufficient growth by sitting, walking, toilet training, using a spoon, scribbling, and sufficient hand-eye coordination to catch and throw a ball. Around age five a child’s fine motor skills are obvious and the child can perform actions like scribbling. From age five to approximately age 12, huge developments are not apparent and the child’s skills are simply refined. While many physical developments, like growing taller, are concrete; the amount of vertical growth heavily depends on a child’s diet. Socioeconomic status is a big contributor to physical development because if the child’s parents do not have the money to provide essential food to the child, the child will not grow as tall as they could be (Eitzen, Zinn & Smith, 2011).…

    Observing this toddler has taught me many things. I was able to learn about the different forms of child development and what it looks like. One of the major forms of child development is physical. The child experiences major child development during the first two years of life. During this time the child experiences gross-motor development. The skills obtained from these developments are the ability to run, jump, catch etc. During the observation of the infant I was able to witness some of these developments. For example over the course of my observation I noticed the infant had significantly improved his ability to stand up and sit down on his own. He was struggling when the observation but seemingly got more comfortable doing it over and over again. The walking stared to become natural and more second nature however it was awkward and difficult when the infant just started. The infant also became more comfortable gripping and grasping objects. Another form of development observed was cognitive development. This development includes the ability to think rhetorically and the ability to communicate with others. The child made significant development in this field he was able to learn more words and express his thoughts in an understanding manner. The infant’s ability to play and interact with other children has increased. His memory has increased and is able to remember certain things over time his able to memorize more things and can recognize familiar faces. The final form of physical development is social-emotional development. This stage involves dealing with other children and being able to pay attention to adult figures. The infant is able to obey the adults and other persons in charge. They also become more comfortable at expressing their emotions. The child is also able to learn empathy and…
