Strategic Thinking
The Vietnam War was a battle that seems to have taught the American Military and Government officials a lot about cooperative working and strategic planning. Each American involved most likely has a different story to tell about the War from the ground soldiers all the way up to President Johnson. However, each participated in a mission driven cooperative work environment with many different thinking styles. These styles included strategic thinkers, tactical planners, and logisticians to name a few. Each thinking style plays a critical role in the development and progression in an organization like the armed forces in the Vietnam War. I would describe myself as a strategic thinker. “Strategic thinking focuses on finding and developing unique opportunities to create value by enabling a provocative and creative dialogue among people who can affect a company’s direction. It is the input to strategic planning—good strategic thinking uncovers potential opportunities for creating value and challenges assumptions about a company’s value proposition, so that when the plan is created, it targets these opportunities. Strategic thinking is a way of understanding the fundamental drivers of a business and rigorously (and playfully) challenging conventional thinking about them, in conversation with others.” (Center for Applied Research). Everyday as a Registered Nurse I need to strategically think for the wellbeing and safety of my patients. Even in my personal life, I tend to strategically think things through; the downfall to this is that I do tend to over think situations at times. Working in the intensive care unit there isn’t many people to delegate tasks to, but there is very many tasks delegated to me. When receiving a task, or order from a physician, I need to be able to fully think out if and when I should perform the order. Sometimes doctors make mistakes, so if I were too not think everything through, mistakes could occur at times. It is critical that doctors

Of all the Athenian leaders during the time of the Sicily invasion, Nicias possessed the clearest vision and a demonstrated ability to think strategically. He provided a comprehensive interpretation of the problems the Athenians might face. He showed a strategic understanding of the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguous nature of the expedition. Nicias applied critical thinking, evaluated the information that the Egestaeans presented, developed valid assumptions and inferences from Alcibiades’ speech, clarified his concern, and presented his point of view that detailed the implications of the expedition. Once the Athenians made the decision to invade Sicily, Nicias presented a concise strategy detailing the ends, ways, and means that mitigated the risks for possible success. Although the Athenians did not adopt his strategy as a whole, due to internal factors and competing interest, his strategy is a classic example of applying strategic thinking to deal with complex problems.…

When I reviewed BJ’s ProSports I focused mostly on the strategic thinking process in order to establish what influence it had on managerial decision-making. I also focused on influences that global competition and culture have on managerial decisions, because the environment changes constantly. Managerial decision-making is important when business is attempting a long-term objective for the company. I have learned that human thinking is an important part to an organization. With that being said, strategic thinking is important to apply when trying to solve problems in the organization. Strategic capacity planning is a great process design tool that allows an organization to evaluate its extended supply chain and its cost-effectiveness, which can drive its capital expenditures and strategies to build a world-class supply chain to compete against other organizations (Citrin, n. d.).
