In order to arrive at a decision on choice of supplier (or mix of suppliers) I have taken the approach of a Total Cost Analysis, which explores all costs associated with the purchase of the equipment in addition to examining which option might bests meet the strategic business needs of Platinum, while best mitigating the inherent risks to the business – like lost productivity due to reliability issues. Examining the total cost of ownership presents a better understanding of the impact that the selection of machinery might have on the business, and in this case revealed that while JabaKing’s price and financing was cheaper than its competitors, that their total cost of ownership was substantially higher. In addition to the total cost of ownership, consideration was given which supplier’s offering would most likely enable…

Determining pricing strategies is critical to a firm’s success because price has a direct effect on a firm’s profits (Kerin, et al., 2008). Because of the importance of finding an appropriate price, an ‘approximate price level’ was determined. In determining this price, an integrated demand-competition orientated approach was decided upon, emphasising consumer preferences above factors such as cost, while stressing competitor’s pricing (Kerin, et al., 2008). Furthermore, the penetration pricing strategy was used as a basis for entering the market.…

Owens & Minor is a distributor of surgical and medical supplies to hospitals and other health care facilities. Due to changing demand from customers, the company is facing increased operating costs, which has resulted in lower profit margins and even losses. In 1993, O&M recorded an $18 million profit, which was reduced to a loss of $11 million in 1995. The entire industry is experiencing similar difficulties. In an effort to resume profitability, O&M is evaluating alternatives to “cost-plus pricing”. Cost-plus pricing does not reflect the true cost of the services provided by O&M. Customers are demanding more of O&M while expecting the price structure to stay the same. The new method of pricing, called Activity-Based Costing (ABC) and Activity-Based Pricing (ABP) will increase efficiency in the supply chain and reduce overhead expenses. Furthermore, it will allow O&M to identify that certain services and customers are unprofitable and tie additional fees to additional services.…

There are many components of a strategic management process, but there are four main elements. According to Wheelen and Hunger, “strategic management consists of four basic elements: environment scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, evaluation and control” (2010). Environmental scanning is a broad look at things that pertain to the company. Many companies will do a SWOT analysis by analyzing the company’s strengths and the opportunities that the company has and then look at the company’s weaknesses and threats. This information is then distributed to the appropriate individuals for strategy formulation. According to Wheelen and Hunger, “strategy formulation is the development of long-range plans for the effective management of environmental opportunities and threats, in light of corporate strengths and weaknesses (SWOT). It includes defining the corporate mission, specifying achievable objectives, developing strategies, and setting policy guidelines” (2010). Once strategies are formulated, the strategies are implemented. Strategy implementation is putting the strategies into effect by establishing the programs and procedures required to accomplish the tasks. The last element of strategic management is evaluation and control. When a strategy has been implemented, the strategy needs to be evaluated in order to understand if the strategy is accomplishing what it was put in place to do. Sometimes the strategy needs to be adjusted based on the outcome findings and continued monitoring until the strategy performs satisfactorily. All of the components of a strategic management process work together to achieve a desired outcome. An organization needs to have a strategic management process in order to stay competitive and be able to have plans in place to achieve the overall goals of the…
