Strange Tools Analysis
English 101
31October 2013
Fourth Paper An essay that influenced me the most is Strange Tools by Richard Rodriguez. It is a literacy narrative about a boy being introduced to the world of literature and how it progressed and changed his life. The thesis of Strange Tools is simply to open your heart and mind into anything because it could benefit you in miraculous ways, in this case that is reading. Another reason why Strange Tools influenced me, is because I can compare myself to Richard Hoggart, a boy that had no idea where books can lead them. Strange Tools was one of our first assigned essays in our class. Thankfully, it opened and changed my mind about reading. I was in the exact same position as Richard Hoggart, until I read the

According to www.blackcolumbus.osu.edu, A literacy narrative is a first-hand narrative about reading or composing (or teaching reading and composing) in any form or context. I find literacy narratives my favorite because of Strange Tools. Another essay that came close was Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris which was also a literacy narrative. The difference with the two is that Me Talk Pretty One Day is acquiring language and communication skills while Strange Tools is formally towards reading and writing. As a student within halfway the semester taking an English course, I feel almost as confident as Richard Hoggart in Strange Tools because of the similar journey i’m sharing with him. Strange Tools influenced me not only confidently but academically. With two more higher English courses to take, I can ensure my pursuit of happiness will be enhanced because of Strange Tools and how it influenced me. The title Richard Rodriguez chose for this literacy narrative is accurate in so many ways. At first I would have never known that the “strange tool” is simply a book and reading it. It is a tool for the mind to open up to the world of literature. Rodriguez’s literacy narrative essay started by setting the scene and building an epiphany. Forever, will I compare myself to Hoggart and his accomplishing goals and use that tool for not only for an academic success but to be aware that even the strangest tools has its

Francine Prose, the author of “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read”, develops her stance that present day literature is stunting student’s abilities when it comes to reading. Prose develops credibility on the subject as she is a mother of two sons in school and an active reader. Research has been done to support her claims as she supplies irrefutable evidence as tp why reading in school has declined. Overall, I agree with Prose’s point of view that literary standards are falling due to the fact that certain books appeal to the lazy teachers, and that present day literature does not develop enthusiastic readers. First off, teachers nowadays choose to teach their students about values through the reading rather than focusing on literary merit.…

While I was reading Outliers: the story of success, I was introduced to many new ideas and concepts as well as explained things that I had thought about, but never quite understood why they were the way they are or realized the outcome. The examples that were most personal to me were how the time of year the hockey players were born affected their success and the rice paddies and the three components to satisfying work.…

Richard Miller has a lot to say in The Dark Night Of The Soul but one thing that really stuck out to me was that there is only so much we can do to try and control the behavior of students. Reading and writing isn’t going to save every one of their problems. It can have just as much of an effect on someone today as technology can. In most of the stories he shows there is this concept along with many others that have to do with reading and writing.…

“Didn’t i realize that reading would open up whole new worlds? A book could open doors for me. It could introduce me to people and show me places I never imagined existed. She gestured towards the bookshelves . (Bare-breasted African women danced, and the shiny hubcaps of automobiles on the back covers of the geographic gleamed in my mind.) I listened with respect. But her words were not very influential. I was thinking then of another consequence of literacy, one i was too shy to admit but nonetheless trusted. Books were going to make me “educated.” That confidence enabled me, several months later, to over come my fear of the silence.…

Overview: For this assignment you will write an autobiographical narrative based on your past literary experience that communicates insight about yourself as a reader and/or writer to your audience (in this case, your instructor and your classmates). Your essay should center around one remembered event and/or one remembered person. It should not be several small anecdotes combined into one essay, although you may refer to these in your essay. You may consider places, family traditions, teaching methods, school experiences, classes, assignments, or anything else from your past that has helped shape your literacy. You will want to make sure that your essay explains how your chosen topic changed you in some way. Use detail, description, and/or dialogue to tell your story compellingly and vividly. To get started, we have read and will continue to read and discuss both professional and student narratives. As a group and individually, we’ll look for common factors that help these narratives succeed as both powerful stories and conveyors of personal knowledge.…

Gladwell weaves a narrative of a young college student whose life changes when he discovers computer programming as a freshman. The student, Bill Joy, is someone that most of the readers of Outliers could relate with. The reader would know what it was like to be a freshman in college. It would not be hard for them to relate with another person who delved deep into their passion to become successful. Gladwell makes the reader vicariously live through Joy’s successful life so that when Joy states that he estimates he was a proficient programmer after about 10,000 hour, the reader does not second guess him (Gladwell 47). Bradley also employs a similar appeal to readers. He begins the appeal by starting to use words such as “our” and “us”. Bradley then transitions to a short example of how the total amount of time he had played guitar did not represent his skill. He uses himself to try demonstrate that Gladwell’s 10,000-hour rule requires focused training. Bradley however, does not do as well with his application due to the fact he does not expand his appeal enough to get readers truly connected emotionally. Gladwell is once again able to better persuade readers by creating a superior emotional connection between readers and his narrative…

I would like to dwell on the positive impact of my parents, books and educational institutions on my personal literacy. It goes without saying that each of the aforementioned factors has had an impact on my development as a literate person to certain extent. At the same time, my interaction with people and books as the literacy sponsors is still of high significance to me now. My literacy sponsors taught me the necessities of life and helped me to become more literate. Thanks to the positive impact of my literacy sponsors, education and self-development…
