“PRO ANA” and “PRO ED”
As most of you will know there are so many people suffering from anorexia, majority of these people are teenagers. And as you will probably also know in today’s society there are a heck of a lot of young people influencing the internet in significant ways, there is something very risky about these two things together. “pro ana” and “pro ed”.
In the real world anorexia is seen as something sad, harmful and wrong but on the internet it is seen as something very different. In case you were not aware of these websites, they tend to have a title saying “pro ana” or “pro ed” these mean pro anorexia and pro eating disorder, these “pro ana and ed” sites are mainly run on tumblr, they usually consist of quotes and pictures, the quotes can be anything from a simple “you can do it” to “if you eat today you will get fat”. And the pictures are mainly of others who have severe anorexia. Basically all of these sites are run by people with anorexia and for them it means they can try to justify what they are doing and they can find a whole community of people who have anorexia also, this makes it seem like more of a way of life some people choose when in reality it is and always will be a very harmful disease. And as the sites start to grow and continue to encourage people to starve because “anorexia is a way of life”, more and more insecure young people will become a part of this community, and these websites will become more and more common. Not only do these websites cause insecure young people to develop eating disorders, but they also keep people who already have an eating disorder sick and lead them away from the road to recovery. There are many articles I have read about “How to hide anorexia from your family” and “pro ana tips” were they will actually give lots of tips for people with these eating disorders to so called “help them” when in reality it is damaging their health and making recovery that much harder.
