Stereotypes Of Greek Life
Deciding to leave Virginia and travel down south to NC State University was a good decision, deciding to join a sorority once I got to State has been a life changing experience. Greek Life is a social group that many people are well aware of, and although it’s sad to say that the negative views about Greek life in most cases out weigh the positive ones. I am a member of Delta Zeta for the past year now and time after time it continues to prove that this was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Although it is sad to say that not everyone sees Greek life like I do. One of the first things that come to mind when you say the word ‘Greek Life’ is often the negative stereotype people relate Greek life to. Through media, people get the connotation that when you are in Greek life you only go to parties, you have no success in the future because you are ‘dumb’ and you use Greek life to buy your friends. But at the end of the day when you take a look at the big picture you will see that the benefits significantly overshadow the negatives.
The following research presented focuses on how Greek Life is perceived and primarily viewed through media. As the technology world is growing and developing we see common stereotypes portrayed in television shows and movies that misinterpret college

In the movie apparently the Greek family only have close relationship with their own people, Greek’s people, and they see non-Greek’ people like outsiders or only for business purposes. For example, when Ian’s parent went to the engagement party to Toula’s house, and Ian’s mom brought a pound cake for the dinner, Toula’s mother did not know what type of cake it was until Ian’s mom explain her after repetitive times. Also, during the party, Ian’s parents seems dry and boring about the party, dance, Greek food and drinks because they are not accustomed to that on the contrary Toula’s family are having fun and…

I attended the Lincoln Park Involvement Fair and stopped at around fifteen booths. I am from out of state and want to find a community of students that share the same interests, ideals, and morals as I do. I completely surprised myself and rushed a co-educational business fraternity and a multicultural/social sorority. I never in a million years thought I’d rush not only one, but two Greek organizations. I attended the recruitment week events and met current members and other potentials. The business co-educational fraternity really appealed to me because of the professionalism and social aspect. Most of the upperclassmen that I talked to have had multiple internships. The brothers help each other and pass down internships and help build connections.…

My desire to be an Alpha man strongly revolves around the fraternity’s aims, mission statement, and vision. These principles and values of Alpha are something that resonates deeply with how I try to develop myself as a man within an academic setting as well the local community. The fraternity itself set the standard for which other Black Greek fraternities and sororities would follow as being the first inter-collegiate fraternal organization established for African-Americans with the sole purpose of mutual uplift and support. There has never been a time when Alpha Phi Alpha fell short of producing men whose leadership and service to the community made an impact on the lives of African-Americans especially the youth. This is why Alpha Phi Alpha stood out to me in a…

I am interested in membership in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. because I love what the Deltas stand for. The organization is filled with strong ,college educated Black women, who in my opinion want to change the world. This is of immense importance to me because this is what I consider myself doing and trying to do. I want to change the world starting with my black community. I admire the strong sisterhood because I look around at the other sorriotys and notice that even though they claim sisterhood, there is not always proof of that. I have witness first hand that the Deltas is sorority that stays with you past college and continues throughout all of your different phases in life. From college to the start of your career till the end of your career…

Alexandra Robbins and Georgianna L. Martin argue in their The Wall Street Journal 2015 article, “Should Colleges Get Rid of Fraternities?” if colleges should remove fraternities. Especially, Robbins believes that fraternities harm college community and involve in risky situations. However, Martin thinks that fraternities are an important part of university life. Believe it or not, Greek life is more than just beer and togas. I know most people have a misconstrued perception of fraternities and sororities, but in reality, they are not like the movies. In fact, many successful adults were Greek in college. Recently, there has been a lot of bad press for some of these fraternities abusing alcohol, but of course, these scandals are all that make the headlines, while philanthropic fundraisers do not. Regardless of the negativity, that’s all it is, because in the end, all of these stereotypes are untrue. We have all seen those boys and girls walking around campus in those really awesome embroidered letters and wondered what it would be like to be a part of something so official and glamorous. Well, I say quit wondering and just go for it. Joining Greek life would be the best decision you ever made because people’s perception of members are completely off, the friendships you make will last a lifetime, and the benefits will help you in your future career.…

I was skeptical about joining a sorority, but I was surprised after I went through rush I meet my new sisters and found my home away from home. When I put a homesick post on Facebook, I had 13 sisters comment on the post or message me making sure I was fine. Being from a town where everyone was caring and loving, made me think I would never find the same support system in college, but I found it in my sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. I still believe if I did not join AGD then I would have gone home from the lack of emotional support.…

Everyone has heard the saying, “Men are from Mars and women are from Venus,” so it should come as no surprise that in many situations the two genders are separated and treated differently. In the midst of the traditional activities accompanying the start of school is rush, in which students who wish to join a Greek-letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different houses and the fraternities and sororities decide which students they would like to become members. A natural question for someone such as myself, is what impact does participation in Greek life have on individuals ' attitudes and behaviors, both in the short and long term? Because I 've never been a member of any girl-only group other than sports teams, I didn 't know much about sororities when I started observing Sigma Kappa (SK). But…

Greek myths helped the people who composed and listened to them shape their identity through a variety of ways. During the Archaic period, writing began again. During this period of history, there were a variety of communities and each Greek community developed into a city-state or polis. Each polis had classes or social ranks which were the aristocracy, the poor, and the middle. They also didn’t have kings which lead to politics. During this period, women did not have any contribution to the city-states, so the city-states were mostly a community of male citizens with rights and duties under the law. In addition, each city-states were very prideful of their town which lead to intense rivalries and often had wars…

As I am a dual-enrollment high school senior I do not participate in on-campus clubs and activities, so seeing how different groups are treated gives me an insight on what campus life will be like after I transfer to a four-year university. I do not plan on joining a sorority so this study will help in my understanding of what different types of fraternities and sororities stand for and represent. For example, in this study, it was found that black fraternities are more career oriented and concerned about racial issues while white fraternities are more concerned about “living the college life” by doing things such as partying and sleeping around. While this study may not hold true to every college and university campus it is very informative in providing information, especially to someone like me who has no previous knowledge of what actually happens on college…

Because I believe student involvement is so important, it is essential for institutions to create communities on campus where students can identify with other students with the same interests. From a personal experience, students who become involved in extracurricular programs and activities, clubs, and student organizations, tend to put more energy into their academics. When students have this sense of belonging, it fosters devotion, loyalty and pride in their school resulting in higher academic achievements. For example, there are two student organizations veterans can join: (1) the Student Veterans Organization; and (2) the Nontraditional Students Organization. One of the advantages to belonging to these organizations is, “it helps veteran’s to tie in better with the student body and helps them connect with the Student Life Community” (p. 5). Student Life fosters effective student learning on and off campus, which enhances interactions between students and faculty, academic engagement, and campus involvement (Frost, Strom, Downey, Schultz & Holland,…

Do you consider yourself a risk taker, excitement seeker or extraversion in college? If yes, then you might find yourself fitting in with the Greek life on campus. However, there is research that suggests living in an environment such as a fraternity or sorority can alter your decision-making process and behaviors. An overwhelming majority of students who choose to live within Greek organizations take part in high-risk drinking and substance abuse. Such abuse is higher in fraternities because men tend to drink more on average than women and the majority of problem drinking transpires at fraternity functions. Additionally, fraternities maintain excessive drinking practices on campus. With this in mind, should Greek life be allowed on campus when it’s shown to promote unhealthy habits?…
