Stereotypes In College
I believe the biggest challenge college students face today is the fact that a lot of them are not mentally prepared. A lot of students do not realize that college is a whole new ball game. In high school some people do not really have to study to make an A, but in college you really have to work for just getting a B. Some students can go in with the mentality "well I was one of the best at my school, it is not going to be different in college" and that is what is wrong. Students in high school should have a week or two were they are graded as if they were in college just to give them a taste of how much they have to work and how disappointing it may be for

U.C. Berkeley: home to sun-kissed biologists and liberal student activists. These are the two main stereotypes associated with this prestigious university. While these two attributes do form much of the campus’ culture, there is so much more to be discovered at University of California, Berkeley. Situated in Berkeley, California, overlooking the San Francisco Bay, lies an urban campus with a thriving Greek life. In addition to a myriad of social and extracurricular activities, are thousands of stressed out students learning at an Ivy League caliber.…

I conducted a survey of 40 of my peers to find out their first impressions of me. I discovered that people thought I was nice but not naive, bizarre but in a cool and relaxed way, studious and outgoing but yet still laid back and chill, and I am happy to say good looking but (unfortunately) not in a movie star way. People also had the misconception that I was quiet, but by our second encounter, this quickly disappeared as they realized I was the complete opposite. All of my 40 peers now agree that I am an effortlessly loud presence. I would like to change this perception of shyness because it is not who I am. I lead the male portion of my chorus and blast out the solos, participate in class so much that it is almost like I am having a conversation…

As a child, being black was never an anomaly for me. I was educated on the issues of white privilege and how black people are often targeted in a world riddled with injustice; my family on my mother’s side hailed from the deep south, so my grandparent’s lives were obviously filled with the turmoil of the racist south. While equality was always something on my mind, even as a child, being born (and raised for a semi-short while) in New York opened my eyes to the many cultures, religious, personalities, genders, and sexualities of the world. Despite this, the general heteronormative nature of the black community (and the bigotry that can spawn from it) worried me especially in a time where I was still learning about myself.…

I should have focused more on my grades this year. By attending many social events, waiting until the last minute to complete work, and refusing to study my grades began to drop. I feel that if I would have put more effort into my school work I would have achieved the grades I am capable of getting. By hanging out with friends and putting off work my grades gradually began to drop. Your senior year is not the year to slack off in; it would have better prepared me for college and set the tone for how I should work if I had just put in the effort necessary to achieve outstanding grades. When in college I cannot make this same mistake; all of my dreams of obtaining a decent job after college could be ruined.…

Growing up, I remember intensively watching popular television sitcoms such as “Saved by the Bell,” “Boy Meets World,” “A Different World,” and more to gain an understanding of what the college life was like. Zack, “the cool kid,” strolled through the dorms seducing any girl he lusted. Topanga, “the weird nerd,” was full of life and salivated at the thought of gaining knowledge. Lastly, Corey, “the average joe,” was viewed as insignificant and faded into the background. These three types of students, “the cool kid,” “weird nerd,” and “average joe,” are the basics for the criteria of what a college student is like. Although sitcom television has conjured its perception of the characteristics of college students, Southern University is a unique institute in which television’s taboos cannot accurately distinguish the types of students that inhabit the university. The most accurate classifications of this unique bunch are the, “Ds earn Degrees Jacks,” “Bob Marley scholars,” and “Rolle Polly round-a-bouts.”…

As the United States becomes more diverse, colleges are seeing increases in minority students. However, this increase does not mean that the same number of students are leaving their college with a degree. Minorities face many challenges in college, some of which have persisted since elementary school. Although colleges try to diminish these difficulties by having different organizations where students can go to seek help, the students have already formed the mindset that they do not do as well as their white counterparts from micro-aggressions, learned thoughts and behaviors, and comparisons of resources.…

A math teacher has a racial stereotype that Asian students get higher scores than other ethnic students in the math exams. This stereotype can lead to confirmation bias when the teacher remembers Asian students get higher scores and ignore when the other ethnic students get higher scores. This stereotype also can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy that the teacher may pay more attention on Asian students, therefore Asian students' scores get higher and it confirms the teacher's stereotype.…

Stereotypes are widespread beliefs about individuals that are formed just because they belong to a certain group, “regardless of their individual characteristics” (OpenStax, 2014, p. 434). Often these stereotypes prove to be harmful and lead to prejudice mindsets and discriminatory actions. While some stereotypes may be based on physiological characteristics, they are taught, not inherited, and therefore this is a social phenomenon. Social psychologists seek to understand how individuals interact with one another and the impact of their interactions, and in this case how stereotypes are formed and their effect on society. The phenomenon of stereotypes is best explained by three different aspects of social psychology; self-fulfilling prophecy,…

The biggest challenge facing college students today is accountability. I say accountability because we live in time where everyone is rewarded for everything that they do whether it deserves an award or not. We live in a world where political correctness is hurting the children of my generation. I see this in my peers and sometimes in myself and it’s not a pleasant thing. The students currently in college represent the shift in thinking and rearing of children. The students and the ones whose parents/teachers were told what they could and could not do all the things they were taught as children were no longer acceptable. We now have a generation that doesn’t know how to fail. Not because everything they do is right or perfect but, because…

The way we present ourselves to society often gives them a predetermined assumption of the type of person we are. Even though it's not always safe to assume a person's personality based on their appearance, people seem to do it anyways. Sometimes people are mistreated due to their appearance, but they purposely present themselves the way they do because of a choice to be unique. As a student in a fairly large high school, it was easy to see the different "stereotypes" of people, as they tended to hang out together. This past experience shows how the outside world can treat you based upon a certain classification they choose to place you in.…

How about the all Asia people look alike stereotype, I can say, I’ve insulted quite a few Asians as well as embarrassed myself when I mix up one Asian person for another. Just this semester, I has math class with an Asian girl, I noticed at the end of the day, I also saw her in my chemistry class. Towards the middle of the semester, I realized I would need help in math as well as her notes from chemistry on the days I won’t be attending. I decided to go up to her after pre-calculus one day to ask if she’s in my 3:40pm Chemistry class, to my surprise, she told me she wasn’t. I asked her if she was sure because the other Asian looks just like her! She said no once again. I was pretty embarrassed, I told her sorry and walked away. I still convinced it was the same person, so I went to Chemistry that day hoping to see the same girl, maybe she misunderstood me I thought. As I walked in class, my eyes were focused on finding this Asian girl, she wasn’t there. She’s late, I thought. A few minutes later, she walked in, I said yes, that’s her! But it wasn’t the actual girl from pre-calculus I spoke to today. I was more embarrassed for accusing the girl of being in my Chemistry class when she wasn’t. I was still in disbelief, I got caught perpetuating the old stereotype of all Asians look alike. I always tried not to…

Stereotype plays a major role in our society today because it’s being use every day by most individuals. People are being judged and misunderstood based upon what society thinks. The development of stereotypes has changed based on the change in society. Stereotype thoughts are usually harmful, based on how different groups of people see others on their beliefs, appearance and behaviors. I was stereotyped as a typical Asian during my life, which has affected me socially.…
