Statement Of Purpose: Boy Scouts
Thankgiving is upon us and I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given to be able to participate in extracurricular activities, especially Boy Scouts. Troop 209 has given me the advantage to take part in endeavors I probably would not have been able to-sailing, rock climbing, and hiking in New Mexico. Being part of my crew has taught me to be prepared for anything, the value of caring for the wilderness, and to never give up. For example, at Philmont, when we hiked around 15 miles, I kept going even though I was exhausted and had run out of water. The sense of accomplishment I felt at the end overrode any feelings of fatigue. Completing badges such as first aid, personal finance, and personal fitness, I have also learned lifelong

I know I’m very excited about it. As I’m getting my cap ready, decorating it and making plans with my friends; I’m reminded by my grandfather who, the day after his graduation, went to Vietnam, that not everyone gets this celebration. He didn’t get a graduation party; he didn’t get a bonfire with his friends. He walked off his graduation stage onto a plane headed for war. And how lucky are we that he did. That he and 2.5 million others did. These people didn’t get parties. They instead got flying bullets and little support from home. So please, in this time of joy for those of you graduating or celebrating a family member or friend’s graduation, do not forget of the Americans who, instead of celebrating, died on the battlefield. And instead of celebrating today as a day to barbeque and drink, remember that today, is a day of…

Ever since I was in about second grade I have dreamed about going to Bishop Lynch. I always heard good things about the school, and have experienced many of them myself. I enjoy that the school offers many sports and clubs, which I would be very active in. I think teams teach leadership, and leadership builds leaders which would help me get far in life. Bishop Lynch provides many opportunities to be included in AP and Honors classes to advance me in my studies. Not only does Bishop Lynch have great academics and sports but you also have a great fine arts department. I believe that creativity sharpens your mind. Lastly, Bishop Lynch High School feels like home. I feel as if I am meant to go to BL. With such a great academic program, fantastic…

It was an amazing feeling to give to the community in that way. I was selected as the master of ceremony for our yearly Veterans Day Assembly this year also. It was an honor to be able to lead the assembly and make sure that the veterans were honored for their true acts of bravery. Also through National Honor Society, I planned a Red Out at a basketball game, a Cardiac Ball, and a 3-on-3 tournament in order to spread awareness and collect donations for the American Heart Association. We ended up raising 2,000 dollars for such a great cause!…

You truly have a beautiful soul. Everything I learn from you I will keep with me wherever I go, and I want you to know that you have really changed my life. I hope that I can end up being a fraction as amazing and brilliant as you are. You are completely unselfish; everything you do benefits others. All you ever want to do is help people. I am positive that every teen you have known in PFO has been impacted by you in a huge way. You are the perfect role model and if any of you has rubbed off on me I would feel blessed. This year has been no different to any other in my life, you have always been there supporting me and guiding me but this year I have realized how much of a difference you make in my life and I thank you. As we said at the small…

Everyone aspires to be a leader. No one wants to be the quiet person in the room that sits back, while looking for the guidance of others. The desire to be a leader troubled me greatly in the past, because I wanted to be the one that innovated new ideas. I knew I was a quiet kid, but all of my worst fears were solidified when I learned of my first grade teachers thoughts of me which were “ a follower, not a leader”. I tried to brush it off, and disguise my true feelings, but that is not the way I wanted others to perceive me as in any way. Although it is difficult to replace these preconcieved notions, I have consistently worked to show others what I’m made of. All I needed was the opportunity to prove others that they were wrong. Especially since I like to think that it is the quiet ones we need to look out for.…

I attended Ketchum High School in Ketchum, Oklahoma. My school’s mission statement was: “Educating all students in a safe, positive environment through rigorous standards to develop productive members of society. Through accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, data driven decisions, equity, high expectations, and integrity.” One example of my school’s athletic department supporting this statement is through accountability. My basketball coach would find out each of his players’ schedules and have a meeting every two weeks with their teachers. He would access their grades and their behavior throughout class, and would either congratulate you or punish you depending on the answer he was given. Another example of supporting this…

Looking back at my high school career, the connections that I have made with peers through marching band prove to be unparamounted. Continuing to participate in marching band at Michigan would allow me to make new friends and connections with people far more diverse than the student body at my school, thus exposing me to new ideas. The time commitment is grand, but this activity has and will continue to advance my skills as a musician, a leader, and make me a more well-rounded person. After four years of dedication, I am interested in pursuing my favorite fall activity at the college level.…

As Apaunic Chief in the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America, I have had a lot of experience in coordinating events, guiding, and training others. I have prepared meetings, and executed them assiduously and efficaciously. I have also planned many events, one of which encompassed an Ordeal, a weekend in which scouts chosen for candidacy by their troops are lead in service projects whilst maintaining a strict vow of silence in order to become a member of the Honor Society of Scouting.…

Throughout the process of brainstorming, planning, organizing, and working, many lessons presented themselves. One of the largest takeaways for me was learning how much time and effort a leader must put out to create any such event. These difficult tasks were made easier due to the effectiveness of the NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) program that I went to in the course of my time with the Boy Scouts. During it I learned many techniques that have enabled me to become a better leader for not only my good but for those around…

During my time as a Boy Scout, I have obtained many awards for my excellence, some acknowledged by others, and others merely personal. When I first joined, a grade schooler among high schoolers, I had not made much of myself in scouts or in school. However, through academic competition at school, I started to challenge myself. In grade six, I received Honor Roll. Moving on to Junior High, I received the Scholars Award and participated in Honor Society. Additionally, I played guitar in the music program. As for Scouts, I became a patrol leader and librarian. I was able to learn the basics of leadership, and some of that transferred to other activities. I started to rank up in scouts and transfer the skills toward school, sports, and daily life. As part of my rank requirements, I volunteered over the summer at the Cordelia library. My favorite books there are: "Ender’s Game," "Steve Jobs," and "Sherlock Holmes."…
