If you’re looking for a good, quick memoir to read during the winter months and need to brush up on your commas and dashes, I highly recommend Mary Norris’s Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen. The book begins as a memoir, Norris explaining her journey from Ohio to Vermont to New York, along the way learning to drive a milk truck, package cheese, and eventually proof pieces for the New Yorker. It’s a good book on a number of levels, the first being that Norris puts grammar in layman’s terms and understands the mistakes those of us who aren’t copy-editors often make. The next is that she is a likable narrator.…

In conclusion, this memoir really touched me. It has its funny moments and it also has its sad moments. Kinship is a great part of the novel because if it weren’t for kinship, none of the gangbangers would’ve gotten along in the first place. Father Greg Boyle makes a good decision in making Homeboys Industries and creating kinship between gangbangers who decide to change their…

Stand By Me is the story of four twelve year olds living in a small town in the year 1959, whose lives were changed by a chance adventure that they embarked on at the end of an indolent summer. The four boys were Gordie Lachance, Chris Chambers Teddy Duchamp, and Vern Tessio. The boys had their own tree house with its special club rules, including a secret knock, and spent their time in meaningless arguments, playing games, or just hanging out. Although on the surface they are typical pre-adolescent boys, you soon find out that underneath their normal bravado and enthusiasm, each of them have problems at home to deal with. Gordie's older brother Denny was recently killed in an auto accident, and his parents have not handled it well. They mope around their house and continually ask Gordie (who is an aspiring writer) why he isn't more like his brother, who was a popular athlete in town. Gordie's best friend, Chris, who is intelligent, brave, and the natural leader of the group, has an alcoholic father, who constantly beats him, and an older brother who is a delinquent. Everyone in town figures that Chris will follow in their footsteps, so he is very much afraid of what his future will be. Teddy is the son of an emotionally disturbed war veteran who has abused him all his life. In his mind Teddy cannot accept his situation, so he has created a fantasy world in which his father is an All American war hero instead of an inmate in a mental hospital. Vern is on the chubby side, somewhat uncoordinated, and is constantly the butt of jokes. Vern's older brother likes to push him around when he is there, and so Vern spends a fair amount of time hiding out. Yet Vern ends up being the catalyst of the story. He accidentally overhears his older brother describe the location where he is pretty sure that the dead body of a missing boy from the town that everyone had been looking for actually lies. This gives him a chance to be important in the pecking order of the club, and he…

Good morning year 11, thank you for turning up to what will be an engaging analysis of the complexity of conflict in literature. If you ponder upon it, how many of us have experienced some form of conflict in our lives? No doubt all of you. But year 11, it is the way in which we handle this conflict that moulds us into the individuals we are today. My work in the novel ‘We all fall down’ has caused some controversy in schools simply because I paint the picture of characters who fail to metaphorically ‘get back up’. I’ve no doubt that if you look closely enough around this room you will associate someone with these problems and that’s what I’d like to explore today; the complex character that is Buddy Walker. The thing that really got the critics cranky was Buddy’s escapist tendencies. The reason being that Buddy drinks, he drinks a lot to assist him in sanding down the rough edges in his highly conflicted life, and that will be the focus of our discussion today. Year 11, I would now offer you some valuable advice in the hope that you will learn from Buddy’s mistakes, and that is that in life, it’s not about how you fall down… It’s how you get up.…

Growing up, Gordie, an avid story teller, dreamed of becoming a writer. Before his brothers accidental death, all his parents would ever care about was his brother. Since his death, Gordie's parents have presumably shut themselves away from Gordie. This, to a certain degree is true of King. Because of his father leaving when Stephen was two, and his mother taking on around the clock jobs, he never really had any parental guidance. The story itself is written with Gordie narrating in the present time look back at the journey. At the time of his flashback, Gordie is a best selling author who has returned to his home town of Castle Rock to revisit his past. This is ironic because at the time Stephen wrote the story he himself had just moved from Bolder, Colorado, back "home" to the town of Bangor. King's childhood home town of Durham is used in several different stories under the fictional town name of Castle Rock. It is also noticeable how in the story when Gordie "looks" back to him and his brother, his brother is the only person who cares for him. He noticeably goes out of his way to look out for…

The music video for "Lay Me Down" by Sam Smith shows how everyone will be stricken with grief after losing a loved one sometime in their life. The video starts out at a funeral and no music is playing. Smith is pictured in front of a casket at the front of a church standing completely still, ridden with grief. When the song begins, it is very slow paced. The people in the church can be viewed behind Smith holding candles while trying to control their emotions. As Sam Smith walks out of the church, the video flashes back to a time of happiness. Smith appears to be saying his vows to his fiancee as they were getting married. Everyone at the wedding is dressed in all white, making the emotions seem much happier. All of the people are smiling, clapping, and having a good time. The video then reverts back to the church where the music and lyrics slow down again, showing the emotion in the song and Smith is seen alone bowing his head in the church from grief.…
