I then began the arduous job of detangling the threads of the towel. The quills were freed one by

Stuck there in the middle of the screen was a blueberry bush. With plump fruit hanging on the branches, and not having tasted fresh food in ages, my mouth began to salivate. They were still covered in bugs and still in that slimy sack. So the next step to my nasty rescues was to grab all 5 of the slimy kittens and take them inside where I had light and could actually see what I was doing. Betty of course was still in her role as a worthless spectator. Once inside, I placed the kittens in the sink and proceeded to rip and remove the bugs infested birthing sacks and quickly rinse the kittens off. I looked over next to the sink where I had placed the kittens on a towel and felt a sense of relief to see them all moving around and still…

Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…
