Spiritual Autobiography
Reflection #1 Spiritual Autobiography The religion of my culture, which most African Americans ascribe, is Christianity. The denomination is generally Baptist, Pentecostal or Apostolic. The three denominations are similar in faith with certain variations. Some variations include attire, personal associations, diet and lifestyles. For generations my family identify with the Pentecostal and the Apostolic faiths. My maternal grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher. He was very stringent regarding his religious beliefs and the religious beliefs of his children and grandchildren. My sister, cousin and I, would often accompany him to speaking engagements throughout the Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia Areas. We formed a trio and would sing hymns …show more content…
Jesus’ ministry was predicated on love. He asserted that we should love one another. Therefore, I believe if we all love one another, the world would be a better place to live. Thus, displaying unconditional love for my fellowman is the spiritual path I ascribe. In addition, unlike the religion of my culture I believe that there are many paths to God. Additionally, I love the God, Goddess deity concept. Common sense demands that there must be a female as well as a male deity instead of the patriarchal system that is in place today. Because where there is a God there must be a Goddess and where there is a queen there is a king to keep harmony and balance in nature and the spiritual forces of the universe.
The images that come to mind regarding the God, Goddess deity concept are usually the female counterparts such as Gaia, Isis and the female Egyptian pantheon Goddesses. I have never asked them for anything but, I do acknowledge their existence. Some of the powers I believe are associated with these entities are the power of nature, the power of love, the power of healing, the power of protection, the power of light, and the power to bestow gifts that are related to the arts and

I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…

In March 2011, I took a few days of classes and received my hunting education certification. Looking back, the actual class time is just a blur of what not to do, but I was reminded of them when I took drivers education last December, with the what not to do teachings. I also remember being very nervous about the test, but having a great feeling when I learned I passed. That October, I remember being immensely excited to go on my first hunt. The night before my dad and I left, I had a parent teacher conference and I remember getting some strange looks in the parking lot because we had a trailer loaded with tents, four wheelers, chairs, and a bunch of other stuff…

While reading the Epic of Gilgamesh, we can clearly see the different roles women played in that time. These women were very diverse, some were considered harlots, others full of wisdom, and some were called gods. Each woman in these stories help the audience to see how important gender roles actually are. Women, as a whole, play a very key role in making this happen. Women start out to seem to be equal to the men in a sense that both genders are “gods." However, the main god happens to be the male. Women are also respected due to the fact that they are able to bear children and reproduce. It is also seen that in terms of physical attraction and sexuality, women are able to have control over the men and somewhat given the upperhand in that…

The rate at which our world is deteriorating is quite frightening. Therefore, the notion of the human race having to settle a new world is not all that crazy. If I was to be one of the first pioneers of the newest frontier, I would have a difficult time deciding who I would choose to settle with me. For instance, to satisfy my own happiness, I would hastily assemble a group based upon my own emotions. But, to better the world and ensure future generations' self-sufficiency, I would ultimately choose to convene a sophisticated, qualified unit composed of a peaceful leader, a gifted doctor, and a brilliant environmentalist.…

The male divine plays a large part in the worlds myths, but the male is not the only being in the world’s myths. About half of the world myths include the male divine but when you look at cave painting and other ancient engravings the female divine is a much more prevalent character. These myths and engraving also includes other beings that appear to have no specific gender, thus showing the unity of both the male and female divine.…

The religious experience of African Americans has been a series of changing practices in order to adapt to American culture and religion. These changing practices are rooted in their attempt to honor and incorporate some key elements from their African heritage, while at the same time, slowly reconfiguring Christianity to fit their needs in American culture. The first ship of African slaves arrived in Jamestown, VA in August of 1619. From the moment, Africans arrived on American soil as slaves, all of their various religious values and practices were stripped from them.…

Thousands of years ago, the Goddess was viewed as an autonomous entity worthy of respect from men and women alike. Because of societal changes caused by Eastern influence, a patriarchical system conquered all aspects of life including religion. Today, the loss of a strong female presence in Judeo-Christian beliefs has prompted believers to look to other sources that celebrate the role of women. Goddess religion and feminist spirituality have increasingly been embraced by men and women as an alternative to the patriarchy found in traditional biblical religion.…
