Summer is coming – here are our must-haves for your garden in December

December is the time when we see the start of the summer season which also means it’s the time when many parents find themselves trying to entertain their children. This year, why not get the children involved in planting your summer veggie garden? It’s a great way to teach children where food comes from and is also easy on the wallet which means there’s spare cash for those much wanted days out.

Take a look at our top 3 must haves for your garden this December.

1. Spinach
Spinach is a great way to add iron to anyone’s diet whether you are pregnant, suffering iron deficiency or simply want to feel like Pop-eye this veggie gives a fantastic natural boost. For best results, spinach seeds should be planted in well drained soil. Place the seeds between ½ an inch and an inch apart, 1 inch into the soil and lightly cover, they will grow best in organic matter such as compost.

Beetroot
Beetroot is a brilliantly versatile veggie. There are many ways to eat it including the traditional pickled beetroot but also more modern recipes such as marinated beetroot with grilled goat’s cheese and creamy beetroot risotto. To grow beetroot, sow 2 seeds every 10cm (4 inches) into a 2cm (0.75inch) deep trench. The children will enjoy using a stick to make the trench. Once sown, cover and water well. Out of the 2 seedlings you will see growing in each hole, remove the weakest to ensure you are left with the healthiest, vitamin packed
