ACCOMMODATION EXAMPLES FOR SPECIFIC DISABILITIES

Here are some examples of accommodations and services that might be considered for specific disability profiles. Please keep in mind that these examples are not intended to be all-inclusive or mandatory. Do not use these examples as a “checklist” as accommodations are to be made on a case-by-case basis specific to individual need. Please also remember that the mere presence of these conditions does not automatically qualify a student for a Section 504 plan. The disability must significantly limit one or more life functions before a 504 plan is to be considered. Additionally, this disability must impact the student so that he or she is not afforded access and benefit of programs and services

    Accommodations involve a wide range of techniques and support systems that help students with disabilities work around any limitations that result from their disability (Rowley & Reigel 1993). There are five accommodations for students with Spina bifida, instructional methods and materials, assignment’s and classroom assessments, time demands and scheduling, learning environment, and use of physical communication systems. Not every child with Spina bifida will need accommodations for school. Those students with severe Spina bifida may need some. As the student with Spinal bifida gets older, accommodations that are needed should change. The first decision would be to find out if the student would need 504 (accommodation) Plan or IEP. Some accommodations that may be needed for a student are extended time on assignments, special desk/chair, preferential seating, personal Para, use of lift or elevator, special transportation and assistance with toileting. If learning disabilities are found then more accommodations to assist with those needs will be given in the IEP.     This legislation offers a variety of services for persons with physical and cognitive disabilities. It is the federal law that authorizes the formula grant programs for vocational rehabilitation, supported employment, independent living, and client assistance. Vocational rehabilitation (VR) services of the Rehabilitation Act help eligible persons with a disability pursue post-secondary education, employment, and independent living. Services include medial and psychological services, counseling, job training, and other services based on person’s needs that help them become qualified for employment. State VR programs are funded by the federal Rehabilitation Services Administration. Also, the employment provision for the Rehab Act requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities if it is not an undue hardship for them. If employment accommodations are expensive, state VR program can help reduce the financial hardship for an employer by paying the costs of accommodations that are beyond employer’s own resources. Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act requires the federal government to practice affirmative action to to hire and promote workers with disabilities, including workers who are deaf.
