Essay One: Narrative

March 2nd 2015

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, commonly referred to as SVU is an American crime television drama series set in New York City, that has been around for 16 seasons. The series follows an episodic narrative, because it has a clearly defined set of characters and the end resolves each episode’s case. The show has various protagonists that make up NYPD’s Special Victim’s Unit and the “narrative problematic” each week is solving new cases of sexually based offences. What makes the show unique is that it’s loosely based on real crimes. Some of the episode’s plots are taken from crimes that have previously received a lot of media attention. The show is created

This allows the viewer closure at the finality of each episode in regards to the crime. Every episode includes a villain, that villain changes almost every episode. There is also a hero, who is usually a detective; frequently it’s Benson, depending on the episode. The show follows a very visualist approach, it tend to be quite dark. A lot of camera shots are in dark places with dim lighting. A lot of the show takes place in the precinct or out on an investigation. It’s also interesting to note that the show’s opening credits are in black and white film, which leads into a black and white shot of the team of police officers/investigators, which eventually turns to color. This is done to show that the heroes of the show are NYPD’s SVU and that they aren’t dark. In order to decipher the various codes used in SVU, viewers have to pay attention to various elements within the show. These elements include how the character is dressed, how their makeup looks and even their gestures. Detectives are normally dressed conservatively and put together nicely, while the criminals tend to look dirty or disheveled. The camera angle, lightening and music during scenes all add to the shows mood. These things can also shape the viewers perceptions of the show and the characters. Music tends to be dark and heavier in nature, during the beginning …show more content…
For example, in the episode “Father Dearest” the perpetrator is feeling powerless after his ex-girlfriend marries the man who ruined his career as a doctor. So he starts raping the doctor’s donor daughters, by pretending to be their sperm donor father. He does this to regain the power the doctor had stolen from him all those years ago. The motivation of the show is the cast of detectives trying to solve the crime that took place in each episode. For example in “Friending Emily,” the motivation is the detectives try to find out what happened to Madison. She was kidnapped while at a party with her sister and now her kidnapping is being broadcast live on the dark net. Conflict comes in when the detectives are led astray during an episode, sometimes they will run into a dead end or will be missing a piece of the puzzle, that will help solve the crime. For example in the episode “Agent Provocateur” a girl named Madison is found almost dead zipped up in a suit case, but can’t remember how she got there. The conflict for the detectives is that she changes her story multiple times. There are also many cause-effect “acts” in SVU. This is when the detectives think they are onto something and there is a small climax in which they are provided new information that leaves the case unsettled. The final climax is when the

“In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories” duh duh … this familiar tune was no different for Season One Episode Eight: Closure. The episode starts with a grandfather and grandson walking through Central Park in New York City on a bright sunny day. This is a stark difference from the usually dramatic starts to Law and Order: SVU however the story line quickly takes a turn when the grandson tosses his frisbee with a little too much force and it winds up in the bushes right next to the next victim of Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler. The detectives arrive only to…

You’re an addict. You don’t know when to stop. Too much is bad for you. You need toget your priorities straight.” Although these stern words can and have been offered in manydifferent situations, I suppose you weren’t expecting them to be used in reference to my8-year-old self’s addiction to the television show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. But, thatwas the case. By the time I was 8, my one true love, my best friends, and my idols were allmembers of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit. I can still clearly hear my mother’s voicefrantically insisting that I turn the T.V. off and listen to her, but her demands were futile becauseI was so entranced in this show and, in fact, I believe it ended up having an enormous influenceon why I am who I am.At…

Traditional crime dramas use a basic narrative: equilibrium, a disruption, and a restore of balance. Furthermore, these shows usually consist of characters who: solve the crimes, commit the crimes, and the victims. Comparing Lie to Me to other dramas, we see this same character pattern pop up. Back to the narrative, each of Lie to Me’s episodes follow the pattern of a crime that needs to be solved, with most episodes ending with all loose ends being tied up, generally at the end of the episode, and some overarching story to keep viewers interested.…

White Collar is a crime/mystery television show airing on the USA Network since 2009. This series is about an ultra-suave forger and con man Neal Caffrey, who always dresses impeccably, even when he 's prison-bound after FBI Agent Peter Burke captures him. To avoid jail, Neal signs on to help Peter catch other white-collar thieves but conceals an ulterior motive throughout the show. In Season 3, the main conflict is when Neal manipulates all of his friends and acquaintances in order to run away to an island, so an agent from D.C. Art Crimes doesn’t take him back to jail for stealing a Raphael painting years before. Throughout this season Neal is unsure of what decision to make; he can either save his relationship with his friends, and risk going back to prison or destroy his new life in New York, just to avoid jail. He struggles with the conflict within himself, and ultimately believes that manipulation can resolve his problem. When Neal manipulates others, he feels euphoric, thus allowing him to believe that he has the power to make his decision, which is to run away. Even in the beginning of the season, the themes of manipulation, power, and greed is very prominent within the first five minutes of the episode. Those themes are shown in the first episode of Season 3, when Mozzie and Neal outsmart the FBI, which enables them to have the opportunity to run away with priceless art. Following the pattern of these repeated themes throughout the show will eventually show the true connections between Neal Caffrey, manipulation, and power. This source is helpful because this show is what’s being connected to the whole essay and the operative word. Examples from the show are used to further explain an argument and the larger significance.…
