In the book “Legend” by Marie Lu, I would like to have Day be my best friend out of all of the characters. Day has been nothing but caring throughout the whole book to Tess and other characters such as June and his little brother Eden, which is a characteristic that I really admire about Day. An illustration as to where Day was caring to Tess was when he met Tess for the first time. Day was on the streets by himself when he saw her in an alleyway. He called out to her and she ran away from him. Day could tell that Tess was really scared so him stayed put. He did not want to scare Tess, he only wanted to help her. ‘“Stop crying, I’m not going to hurt you.’ I knelt down beside her” (Lu 85). This quote shows Day trying to take…

In closing, it is ironic that I see Melinda's story as a metaphor just like the tree she created. A seed of shame was planted inside of Melinda, and just as a tree she silently grew. Processing every painful moment, sprouting slowly. Yet, growing steadily in her own strength without anyone's knowledge. Only to rise from the dirt as tall and bold as the tree she…

Melinda in “Spotlight” has a vivid inner voice, where the reader can make an inference that she is a analytical introvert. The quotes “I see a few friends - people I used to think were my friend - but they look away” and “There’s that new girl, Heather, reading by the window. I could sit across from her. Or I could crawl behind a trash can. Or maybe I could dump by lunch straight into trash and keep moving out the door.” shows how the author’s use of diction helps create her voice as analytical and introverted. She can be characterized as analytical in these situations as she was looking at her old friends and a person reading a book while analyzing the situation. She can be characterized as introverted in the sense that she has given an…

When Melinda tried to tell Rachel that Andy raped her but Rachel thought Melinda was jealous of her. Andy tried to rape Melinda again because Rachel found out what happened to Melinda. The chapters are split up into short, snippy paragraphs setting the mood and puts most the main ideas in plain sight. Also being split into the marking periods of Merryweather high school gives the illusion of time passing and Melinda’s life progressing throughout freshmen year. Speak is also full of flashbacks that shed light on how certain events played up to Melinda’s condition and to the treatment she receives in school. Anderson picked the right style to write this particular topic in. Overall it is dark and can lead an individual to avoid the awkwardness and discomfort in reading about rape, but Melinda’s personality portrayed by Anderson allows for ironic and sarcastic commentary that provides some relief to the…

Another evil that Melinda experiences is Heather using their friendship for her own benefit. The literary element used here is character. One prime example of this is when Heather asks Melinda to help decorate the staff room for Thanksgiving. Melinda helps her just wanting to keep her friend happy. When Melinda’s decorations are praised, Heather takes all the credit. Melinda overcomes this evil by telling Heather she won’t help her decorate for the prom. Heather on her own does a horrible job and all off the seniors end up hating her.…

During the Middle Ages, men are known to have more power than women, controlling them and taking advantage over them. Women do not have the same rights as men and they are treated differently. Men are superior while women are inferior. Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales changes the society of the Middle Age completely in The Wife of Bath. In The Wife of Bath, the main character of this tale, or the one telling this tale, is a woman, the Dame Alice. The Dame Alice tells her tale as if she has nothing to hide and she explains the role of women in her tale and she explains her tale, thus, becoming the first feminist character in Western Literature.…

Describing Melinda's relationship with her parents could be summarized in the word "fractured." The relationship between Melinda and her parents is a fragmented one. They seem more concerned with navigating the difficulties in their own lives and in their own worlds, as opposed to helping Melinda navigate through her own challenges. Their vision of a child is one in which the child is perfect, devoid of any troubles. When in reality, avoiding challenges faced in the teenager years always comes back to parenting skills and bonding – parent to child. As signified in the quote Melinda is feeling excluded or neglected to talk to her parents having her rather keep silent than speaking. Neglecting is caused by how they would be to busy arguing therefore, neglecting what Melinda has to say. Also she feels as if…

Society is going to judge people no matter what they do, so people might as well be who they want to be. In the crucible, during the Salam witch trials, Abigail Williams did what she wanted, she was not the typical Puritan, and definitely not a perfect one at that. She did things women were not allowed to do. She lied, and costed many people their lives because of it. She had a man cheat and blacken his name. She uses her acting skills and the girls around her to get others to believe the fake. Abigail Williams is not the perfect Puritan.…

    Madame Defarge Quotes

While pursuing revenge, it is said to start digging a grave along with the grave of the person being avenged. In Book 3, Chapter 14 of A Tale of Two Cities, Madame Defarge reaped that which she sowed. It was made evident that concerning Madame Defarge, the revolution in France is in fact just a euphemism for the revenge she wants to execute against the Marquis Evremonde. She adopted compensating that which the Marquis stole from her, which was all her living relatives, as her personal mission. Despite achieving her goal of capturing Charles Darnay, and having him sentenced to death by the guillotine, she is still not satisfied. Madame Defarge goes in search of Lucie, Darnay's wife, in hopes of catching her in the act of lamenting for a prisoner.…

Melinda thinks this when she is caught by her social studies teacher in the hall after she gets embarrassed in the lunchroom and leaves. The quote shows that Melinda thinks she won’t be heard no matter what she tries to do or how much she tries to explain, that she feels faceless in the face of the world and in front of people. This reinforces the feeling of isolation and loneliness that the author shows in the first few chapters. I think Melinda also feels a bit bitter about it, she feels as if it’s unfair that she is treated in this way and it only serves to further separate her from others. This attitude Melinda shows towards communication will not bode well for her in the future if she doesn’t change and if she wants to make friends. She…

Freeman (art teacher)- When reading the previous section I thought Mr. Freeman was a psycho and negative person, and all he did was complain about the school board and how they cut the art supplies budget. Through this section of the novel I got to see another side of Mr. Freeman- much more caring and relatable. He does a few things for Melinda that no one else would probably do for her. One of them being that he tried to relate to her pain. When Melinda showed him her turkey bone exhibit artwork he said “I see a girl caught in the remains of a holiday gone bad, with her flesh picked off day after day as the carcass dries out (64)”. Also, he cared enough to drop Melinda off to Effert’s (her mother’s clothing store) when she had no ride and even let her know he was there for her if she ever needed to talk. As she gets out of the car he says “if you ever need to talk, you know where to find me. You’re a good kid. I think you have a lot to say. I’d like to hear it…
