    2. SSgt Arnold is a self-starter that made an immediate impact on the leadership and performance of the company. He was easily the top sergeant and was routinely given tasks normally reserved for SNCOs. Marines under his charge were always well organized and highly motivated directly due to his efforts. One specific noteworthy achievement was his intervention and direct actions when faced with an attempted suicide. He fearlessly stepped into the point of friction, correctly and swiftly took action without guidance and limited information on the situation. His actions and maturity were responsible for safe guarding a life of a fellow Marine. In addition, then Sgt Arnold masterfully performed as a Section Head/Area Supervisor for the Henoko Ammunition Supply Point. In this capacity, he was responsible for 22 ammunition magazines with 2500 line items of explosive materiel valued at roughly $90 million dollars. During his time in the storage section the inventory accuracy rating was a stellar 98.3% well above the DoD requirement of 95%.…

The deployment of the division reserve is a positive manifestation of shared understanding. Honeycutt synthesizes the reports of the FAC (forward air controller), Cobra gunships, and his soldiers to determine that he will require B Co. He effectively communicates this understanding to the BDE commander, COL Conmy, who approves their release (Zaffiri, p. 67-68). Honeycutt’s use of a light observation helicopter during the final two assaults (18 and 20 May) highlights the flow of information during the battle. This perspective affords him better understanding that he uses to employ fires and maneuver units on the ground. He also pulls information from his subordinate with questions such as, “Can you take the sonofabitch?” or “How’s it going? ... Can you make it?” (Zaffiri, p. 223).This technique drives his use of mission orders and commander’s…

Throughout the whole mission we never had any help or good guidance from our so called leader. Our leadership made the mission ten times harder than it had to be. If they would have stepped in, and hired a few more people or let my team borrow a few people from another team that wont using all their members we would have finished a lot sooner as well as done a better job as well. So instead myself and a fellow employee had to step up and plan out how we could inspect all units under the 30th Brigade as well as get parts ordered and apply them when they came…

The mental state of a soldier can be influenced by many variables. One of the more controllable variables is the commanding officer. In Battle Leadership, Von Schell outlined two ways he influenced his men. He instilled a sense of security, whether it was a false sense did not matter. He also gave them opportunities to be active, and in a way, let them control their actions. A third influence on his men’s mental state was not his doing, but random well placed jokes that lightened the mood.…

Already handicapped by their lack of numbers, the Marines were facing a second enemy as well: the deadly North Korean winter, which had been known to reach temperatures of approximately…
