Spanish Translation
For me personally translated or untranslated it doesn’t really matter. I don’t speak Spanish so to me it seems the same just one is in English and one is in Spanish. However, for someone who does speak Spanish the translation might be very different because of how things in Spanish don’t always translate over the correct way into English. I don’t see why Sergio Waisman’s changed the names though because they are just that, names.

Vicente Flores did not pass the assessment. He scored 60% for the objective part and 66% for the performance portion. His cumulative score was 64%. In order for Vicente to demonstrate content knowledge, the assessment has to be modified to meet his needs. The objective portion can be modified by simplifying language, and reading the test to the student.. The complete assessment can be modified by allowing Vicente Flores to use vocabulary cards with the meaning of each figurative language during the test. For the second portion, the teacher can allow Vicente to come up with the examples orally, instead of in writing. She can also read each item and explain the directions in simpler terms to allow him to fully understand what is asked.…

Both essays are memoirs describing how Cisneros and Tan became writers. In Cisneros “Only Daughter,” her father refers to her only daughter as one of his sons. “I have seven sons. He meant siete hijos, seven children, but he translated it as sons. He didn’t mean anything by that mistranslation, I’m sure. But somehow I could feel myself being erased” (112-113). In this anecdote Cisneros describes how the language shaped her in wanting to get the approval of her father. In Tan’s, “Mother Tongue,” she talks about a political gangster who had the same last name as her family and wanted her family to adopt him. The gangster became powerful and one day showed up at her mother’s wedding. Part of what her mom said, “Now important person very hard to invite him. Chinese way, come only to show respect, don’t stay for dinner. Respect for making big celebration, he shows up. Means gives lots of respect” (467). In this flashback Tan describes how her mother’s “broken language” helps her develop her language into the writer she…

Se Habla Espanol by Tanya Barrientos was about a Latina girl who struggled with her identity. She was born in Guatemala but has lived in America since she was three years old. In the beginning she was somewhat embarrassed by her Hispanic heritage. Tanya felt inferior to the white people because of how she looked and because of her last name. The tone of the essay was a serious and desperate cry for help. It seemed she was speaking to anyone who could listen and relate to her. Tanya wrote from her point of view and how she felt like a “gringa” trapped in a Latina girl’s body.…

This book is capable of influencing individuals to become who they wish to be and not what others expect of them. We all have a collective struggle, when we are reading literature. The author should be commended for his ability to write such a beautiful piece of literature during such hard times. Rudolf Anaya was able to capture the full essence of a moral identity crisis and help the readers better understand their own meaning in life. A weakness in the book is that there is not a glossary to translate the slang Spanish words, and overall Spanish words for the non-Spanish speakers. I believe it is important that readers could refer to the same book to be able to find out what a specific word means. Instead readers are left with the task of going to look for an external source to define specific words. We have “Jesus, María y José” for example, that is a slang expression for a moment of…

An anonymous author wrote “Our culture, our traditions, our language are the foundations upon which we build our identity.” This brings out what Tanya Maria Barrientos argues throughout her essay, “Se Habla Español.” She struggled to identify herself as Latino and embracing her Spanish heritage. So at a young age, she decided to step away from America’s stereotypical view of Latin’s and embrace what she thought was the correct way to live. One main thing she didn’t want was to be able to speak Spanish, because she thought people would automatically judge her. Like Barrientos, I how was raised had a lot to do with my identity and how I perceived myself and the world.…

In my opinion, I’m a part of the Hispanic “cultural language” who are hardworking, friendly, very religious and very respectful. My mom was always working and she taught me to get far in life I need to work for it.
