Abstract

After the president Mohamed Siad Barre was deposed in 1991, all hell broke out. This has lasted for 21 years in Somalia. Wars between the country's different parties have triggered each other. Today Somalia is a country that lives in total chaos. So what really happened during all these years and what was it that went completely wrong? In this essay I will describe the main problem. Who is involved? What does the current situation look like? How might we slow down or stop further crisis in Somalia? Presentation

It has been long a conflict in Somalia since the 1800's. The country has been divided between Italy and the UK. When the Colonial countries left, it caused significant instability in the country. After many regime and authority changes in the country, eventually general Mohammed Siad Barre in 1969 took control and charge of the country. Until the early 1990's when Barre was dictator, the country was under the circumstances feeling relatively well. However as timed passed, peoples disappointment and belief for the dictator reduced so eventually he was overthrown 1991. The people was unhappy with the dictators ways of ruling the country as famine grew everyday. Since then civil war has been part of several different phases and it has escalated over time. With for example war against Ethiopia, USA and the UN. The year 2006 was one of the most important years in Somalia's modern history. A phase, which contains series of different conflicts, including the largest between government forces, TFG (Transitional Federal Government) which has back up by the AU (African Union) and their enemies, the Islamic rebels. These include the Hizbul Islam (HI, the Islamic party) and Al Shabaab (HSM, Mujahedin Al Shabaab). The 2010's can be seen as the worst in many years. It began in 2009, when Ethiopia withdrew their troops from Somalia after loosing a great deal of men and seeing their soldiers being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu. One can see a similarity with what happened to the U.S. Armed forces when they invaded Mogadishu 1993, when a dead American soldier was dragged in the middle of the capital in front of the whole world. I will clarify this very complex conflict and give an analysis and solution to the crises in Somalia.

The article: Somalia being ripped apart by the clans by Global.Finland gives an overall picture of the situation in Somalia and how it has been since 1991. It also explains some of the main parties in the conflict. When the dictator Mohammed Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991, civil war broke out in the country and it has never stopped since. When the dictator’s regime was overthrown, Somaliland in northern Somalia declared it's independence. However they have not been given an international recognition. They are working as an independent state and the states economy and safety is more stable than "Somalia’s". In 2004 the...
