Soil and Density Lab
Soil Porosity & Density
Objective: To determine if the porosity of soil is related to the density.
Hypothesis: I think that that the porosity of soil is related to the density because the higher the density of the sand the lower the porosity of the sand, which are both componets for the water to rise.
Materials:
Sand and Loam samples
• 2 large containers
• Plastic cups
• Water
• Scale
Procedure:
Loam
1) The loam without the water was fresh , it had different shades of black, and there were also organic materials in it such as small pebbles, roots, and leaves.
2) Mass = 51.1 grams
3) Volume = 200 mL
4) Combined Mass = 172.3 grams
5) Total Volume of water added = 250 mL
Sand
1) The sand without the water was very grain and dry, it had different shades of brown, and there were also organic materials in it such as small pebbles and roots.
2) Mass = 51.2 grams
3) Volume = 100 mL
4) Combined Mass = 145.3 grams
5) Total Volume of water added =310 mL

Observation
Loam: The loam without the water was fresh , it had different shades of black, and there were also organic materials in it such as small pebbles, roots, and leaves. When we added the water to the loam some of the dirt disolved, and went to the bottom. I think this happend because the loam had a higher porosity so it was less dense making the loam disolve.
Sand:The sand without the water was very grain and dry, it had different shades of brown, and there were also organic materials in it such as small pebbles and roots. When we put the water in the sand, some of the sand was floating, I think this occured because the porosity of the sand is low, so when the pores get filled the particles absorb the extra water making it more dense, so it will float.

Analysis
1) The sand mixture did not rise to 400 mL because the porosity of the sand is low, and the sand is dense so when you pour the water in the container there is less pore space between the

We came to the conclusion that salt in water is a homogeneous mixture which readily does dissolve in water. While Sand is a heterogeneous mixture due to the many different particles that it contains, while in water it does not dissolve and therefore it remains separated. What physical properties will you use to separate this mixture? The physical properties that were used to separate this mixture were filtration and distillation among this experiment. Through distillation we were able to see the left over compound that was left after all the evaporation happened inside the heated beaker. Is the combination of salt and sand a new compound or a mixture? The combination of salt and sand will always be considered to be a mixture because it cannot be permanently changed, therefore it can always be brought back to the same state that it was started with, it cannot be a new compound due to the mixing of crystals with…

If you put an egg in tap water, it will sink to the bottom. If you add enough salt, the egg will float to the surface. Density is the mass or volume of an object. It’s easier to think of it as the thickness of the object. Buoyancy is the force that allows an object to float. I performed a fun experiment to see how increasing density of water could make an egg float or submerge. Anyone can do it.…

This is where seeds sprout and other plants roots grow. This layer is also made up of humus, but here are other mineral particles as well. Next is the eluviation layer (E). This layer contains mostly sand and silt. It is the eluviation layer because of the process that takes place here where minerals are…

Sand Dunes – Sand dunes are formed from coastal deposition, sand is blown and stopped by an obstacle, which may be as small a plant.
