Social work groups must have certain defining characteristics within its structure (). These characteristics must include the purpose, how the group was formed, structured and group content ().The purpose of the group is to help adolescent cope with grief and loss using supportive guidance. In response to a common need identified among adolescents this group was formed. Adolescents needed a safe place to cope with the grief process. This is a voluntary group for adolescents who have lost a parent within the last five years or have a parent who is terminally ill. Although this group is structured as a closed group some members will not end at the same time due to natural predetermined time boundaries ().

Support groups provide an environment where adolescents can express their feelings. It’s a safe place where one can reveal secrets that they were too ashamed to share. In addition support groups allow you to evaluate your situation and take action to complete unresolved issues.
