Intro to Social Work 9:30-10:50

My Career as Social Work Practitioner Jashondria Mallard

When I considered social work as a profession the decision was one made with great ease. As a juvenile I faced many hardships that still affect my everyday life. After beginning my education as a social work major I now realize I was a youth that lacked a necessary advocate. Alot of problems that I dealt with could have been disputed or even prevented had I been able to receive certain resources and interact with the proper professionals. I notice also that there are more potential cases than professionals available to solve them today. The world we live in lacks advocates with the well-being of those suffering social problems in mind. My past and the sight I have gained for the future ,alone lead me to the profession of a social worker.
As an adolescent I found myself in and out of the juvenile correctional system for various incidents. I now can say I struggled with many typical issues faced by those of my generation, while at the time not knowing of any help available to me outside of my home. Not only did I struggle with acting out but I also had many emotional tribulations that I later found could be maintained by seeking help from a clinical professional. While feeling I was at an dead end I met a social worker through Harris County JJAEP named Thelma Herman. With the help of Mrs. Herman I was able to take benefit of all the help and resources I was once lacking. She got involved in the middle of a big crisis in my life that lacked a lot of understanding from those around me. Her influences’ put me in the right direction with my education and allowed me to regain a hold on my life. Once I took advantage of various programs such as; Houston Advocates, MHMRA, and Snap, I was able to notice a great difference in my everyday life due to these

By promoting education on issues such as mental illness, implication of self-medicating, and identifying high-risk individuals for incarceration, I can directly empower and advocate members of my community. These are values that I intend to cultivate throughout my professional development and are directly supported by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics. The significant factors that influenced my choice of social work as a profession was after the death of my mother. Growing up, my mother always stressed on the importance of education. She made sure we never missed a day in school, we were expected to go to school even when we were very sick. My mother's perseverance and encouragements contributed to all her seven children becoming college graduates. My mother’s tragic event ultimately led to my interest in social work.…

In November 2009, the Care Council produced ‘Social Work Career Pathway, A Discussion Paper’. This paper sets out a plan for developing a national career pathway for social workers in Wales, linked to a framework for post qualifying education and training. The proposed career pathway is intended to strengthen the retention of experienced social workers in frontline roles. It is also designed to ensure that social workers have the necessary knowledge and skills, and access to learning and support, to help them deliver high-quality services at all stages of their careers. The career pathway caters for newly-qualified social workers, as well as experienced practitioners, and the development of new roles such as the Consultant Social Worker. The career pathway discussion paper was the subject of a report to Care Council in January 2010. The paper was circulated widely to and discussed by stakeholders including with the National Strategic Advisory Partnership for Social Work Training, the Welsh Assembly Government, the Association of Directors of Social Services. Overall, there is support for the career pathway model and the opportunity it presents for raising the status of the social work profession and standards of practice. The proposed career pathway and associated Continuing Professional Education and Learning (CPEL) framework has been presented to the Social Work and Social Care Workforce Task Group established by the Deputy Minister for Social Services. The Task Group has agreed that the career pathway and CPEL framework should be recommended to the Deputy Minister when the Task Group reports in November 2010. - See more at: http://www.ccwales.org.uk/career-pathway-for-social-workers/#sthash.bSqsF8to.dpuf…

The career that I have chosen to pursue is that of a Child, Family, and School Social Worker. The nature of work is to provide social services and assistance to enhance the social and psychological functioning of children and their families and to increase the family welfare and the scholastic performance of children. At times, these social workers may help parents, as well as, plan adoptions, and find foster homes for neglected, abused or abandoned children. In schools, they direct their attention to issues and concerns such as teenage pregnancy, misbehavior and truancy. They may also suggest to teachers different ways to approach and solve such problems. The duties of a child, family, and school social worker are to consult individuals, groups of people such as families and even communities in regard to issues which include child care, medical care, mental health, unemployment, poverty, physical abuse, substance abuse and rehabilitation. They interview people individually, in families or different types of groups in order to properly evaluate their situations, competency, and obstacles and therefore decide what services are necessary to meet their needs. Once the issues are established, they refer clients to community resources for services such as job placement, financial debt consulting, legal aid, housing, financial assistance, and provide solid information such as where one should go and how one should apply. Social workers serve as mediators between students, schools, homes, family services, child guidance clinics, protective services, courts, doctors and other connections to aid children who are faced with problems such as disabilities, abuse, or poverty. If a parent has child rearing problems these social workers counsel them by interviewing the child and family in order to conclude if further action is required. In addition to counseling parents in child rearing, social workers advise parents as well as teachers and other school…

In this essay I will discuss how I feel that I have developed personally and professionally as a social work student during the first level of the degree course. I will do this through examination of reflective accounts recorded during the placement learning opportunity. I believe that the use of reflection has been very significant in enhancing my personal skills and learning about my own values. I also believe that the course has instilled me with more self awareness and has given me a better understanding of how I am perceived by others. I have learned that through anti oppressive practice, social workers are able to promote inclusion by challenging discrimination and inequalities. In this essay, I will examine the methods, tools, and techniques that I have learned to date. I will conclude by discussing my particular learning needs and plan for the remainder of the course. As part of this, I will consider my learning style and the necessary methods I will utilise to bridge the learning gaps.…

The challenges of being a social worker include how “social work involves helping others and getting involved with people in such a close way can sometimes put you in harm. The risk is real and social workers need to be cautious” (“5 Pros”). No matter what career a person chooses, there will always be risks. Social work comes with big risks. Most people go to or are assigned to a social worker because they have a problem in their lives that they need help solving. That can sometimes mean they did something dangerous and you may be in harm's way. Another negative thing about being a social worker is that it “might be labeled by some to be rewarding, but it can also be emotionally draining” (“5 Pros”). A social worker spends most of their day listening to the problems in the lives of their clients, and giving advice to their clients. That can be very emotionally draining because a certain amount of patience and listening skills are required to get through the day. Some days a social worker may have a more difficult client, and they put more effort and time into that one client which can be very…

Deciding what populations and types of clients with whom I want to work with, in the field of social work, is one of the most important decisions ever, regarding my career. From as early as childhood, I have always known that I want to work with children in whatever career path I embarked on. After deciding education and teaching was not the career I wanted to choose as my forever career, I always envisioned myself being a child and family social worker. I feel so comfortable with this population because I have always felt a need to want to improve the quality of life for families and children. I did not have the best childhood-due to experiencing homelessness, addictions and having to mature at an early age, but I knew the warm feeling that I received when my family was together and thriving was the best. According to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Work (NASW), “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppresses, and living in poverty” (NASW 2010). Children are one of the most vulnerable and helpless beings in the world, so they need someone to fight for them. This is the population is where I feel I can help to enhance the social functioning of children and families the most.…

I've always felt the need to help others and somehow make a difference in a person’s quality of life. If you're a person like me who cannot stick to one thing, taking an education on social service worker is an excellent approach for setting a base foundation on your future career. For example, if a person who has take an education in social service were to get a job in advocating, but later realizing they're not really interested in advocating anymore, the person could switch from advocating to let's say educating, researching or even case managing. My plan is to gain the knowledge and the abilities of becoming a social service worker, and from that I can easily choose…

I really liked reading your post. I also thought about working in a private practice setting. I think that working in a small setting, there is a lot more job security. Working in a high-populated setting means that there is a lot of competition in order to progress at work. I love competition, but I really don’t want to be in competition with about twenty-five other social workers. You have a lot of experience. I have barley even been alive for twenty years. I think that your experience will be very useful in social work. At my practicum, I work in a cubical and make dozens of phone calls a day. I rally don’t like to work in a cubical, I love doing field work, its when we visit peoples homes and actually talk to people in their settings. I…
