Social Identity In Mean Girls
I decided to use the movie mean girls as an example of social identity theory. There are different clips in the movie that show S.I.T. the main character in this movie is a girl named Cady. She was homeschooled in Africa by her parents, her parents decide to move to Illinois, and she finally gets the experience of going to a public school, she notices that popularity divides a lot of the students into little cliques. There is one group in particular that are called the plastics, these are the most popular girls in the school who everyone wants to be apart of. Cady ends up being in this group named the plastics because they find her pretty. The first clip that shows S.I.T. is when Cady’s friends (before the plastics) hand her a map of the school cafeteria and tell her “where you sit in the cafeteria is crucial.” The map has the names of all the different cliques and where they sit such as where the freshman sit, where the Asian nerds sit, and where the cool Asians sit. This is what the map consists of. There is also a second clip where S.I.T is shown and that is when Cady and the …show more content…
was able to explain the communication events in these clips. Each clip had a part of S.I.T associated with it. With the different cliques in the movie or talking among themselves about how they were better than any other group. Each clip showed that these events could take place outside the movie. For example, the scene with the cafeteria my high school was kind of split up into groups like that too. You had the table with the popular girls, table with the emo people, and the table I sat at which was where the Mexican kids sat. The second clip I could also see how you can associate it with outside the movie, which was that the popular girls talk bad about other groups of girls so they would make themselves feel better. It was interesting seeing S.I.T. occur in movies because so far we only talked about it in class and now seeing it used somewhere else was very

This is all influenced by George Herbert Mead’s theories that perceptions of others and their approval influence what people make their identity or better known as the Social Self Theory (Julianne, Para 7).
