SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Aim: To observe a child, who is 4 years 3 months old, in a construction area during a free-play in order to identify her social skills.
Objectives: To observe and record Rebecca’s ability to share toys with other children.

Record of observation

Three children are sitting at a big round table and playing with different constructional toys. Rebecca is playing with big plastic letters. The teacher approaches the children.
Rebecca (to the teacher) I know how to make my name!
Child 1 I know too!
Children 2 and 3 I know too! I know!
Teacher If you make your names I’ll give you special cuddles.
Rebecca This is my letter (takes letter “R”)
Child 1 I want all green letters (starts picking green letters)
Rebecca Mine is not green.
Child 1 I’ll make a tower (grabs several letters)
Rebecca I’m making my name (takes letters “B” and “E”)
Child 1 Look! It’s gonna fall! (puts seven letters on top of each other)
Rebecca No. It won’t.
Child 2 It will! It will!
Rebecca (to child 1) What are you doing?
Child 1 I’m making it bigger (puts two more letters on top of the “tower”)
Teacher You are making it higher.
Rebecca I am still making my name (looks at the letters in front of her)
Child 1 I need more! I need those! (takes Rebecca’s letter)
Rebecca No! It’s mine! (tries to stop child 1)
Child 1 But I need those for my tower (looks at the teacher).
Rebecca It’s my name! She is taking my name! (looks at the teacher)
Teacher (to Rebecca) Don’t take her letters. Play with the ones that you already have.
Child 1 But my tower won’t fall. I need more.
Rebecca looks at the “tower”, takes her letter “R” and gives it to child 1.
Rebecca It’s O.K. I can do my name with “B”, because my mum calls me Becky.
Child 1 put the letter on top of the “tower” and it falls down. All children laugh. Rebecca takes her letter “R” and gives it to child 1 again.
Rebecca Do it again! I’ll do my name with

Nicholas Moey. Ashley Scott Moey. Nicole Moey. These were all possibilities that never made the cut. Still a blob in my mother’s belly, they didn’t know yet whether I was a boy or a girl. My mother had this book filled with baby names and would randomly flip through until she found one that sounded “right” to her. The name “Nicholas” seemed to roll off her tongue just fine. A quick trip to the doctor’s office to find out the sex of the baby revealed that I was a girl pretty early on. Nicholas Moey was out of the question.…

Depending on where I am, I am called by different names. At my old school, Taylor Exemplar Academy, many of my friends and teachers called me Izzy. During the summer I live at the Detroit Yacht Club; my close friends there call me Bella. After I moved and went to Plymouth High School, my friends and teachers now call me by my real name, Isabella. My nicknames, Bella and Izzy, tend to fit who I am more than my actual first name Isabella.…

The bell is rung in the playground for the first time and all of the children are required to stand still and quietly, it is rung once more and the children line up in their designated area. Their class teacher goes outside on to the playground to collect them, and leads them into their classroom. The children take their coats off in the hallway and hang them up on their individual pegs, and then take their ‘book’ bags and put them into one of two boxes. One box is for the children who have written their book reviews for that week in, and the other is for the children who have not yet completed this task. The children then collect their early work books from where they are kept and sit at their places to write their spellings out, if the children do not know what their spellings are, they are written on either the white board or the smart board for them to copy out. During this time I help any children that find it difficult to take their coats of due to stiff buttons for example. Also I tell the children to be quick and stop talking otherwise they all stand in the corridor talking quite loudly.…

The child started to wrap a baby doll in a baby blanket. At first she seemed to be exploring how to use the blanket, then she placed the doll on the floor in front of her and laid the blanket over the baby, brought the baby up to her to proceed in wrapping the baby. She was very precise in how she was wrapping the baby, but was also very slow in what she was doing. She seemed to really enjoy this activity, as she was very concentrated on what she was doing, and eventually moved to a place alone so that she may continue wrapping the baby on a table (which she was not supposed to do, she was supposed to remain on the rug with the rest of the children).…

Would Oprah have become a famous talk show host if her name had been Cindy? Would Elvis be the King of Rock and Roll if his name had been Jim? Our names are the cornerstone of our personality. From creative spellings to family tributes, our names say a lot about us, and they help us become who we are. Whether they are a loving nickname from a close friend, a mocking joke from peers, or an innocent mispronunciation from a teacher, names are a powerful and personal piece of who we are. A name identifies us. It is the sound which we respond to. Since a name's meaning can carry so much weight, it comes as no surprise that they are usually chosen with great care.…
