Social Development During The Transition To Adulthood: Differences By Social Class

This week’s class assignment was about social development in adulthood. This was something I knew little to nothing about, so I decided to pick a topic that would be interesting for me to research. The topic I chose was social development differentiated by race and social class. The article that appealed most to me for my topic was; Intimate Relationship Development during the Transition to Adulthood: Differences by Social Class. I chose this topic and article because I figured I would learn something new about how young adults differentiate intimate relationships by races and social classes. From my personal life experiences, I have notice that different races and social classes do act a little different when it comes to relationships. Some classes are more discrete about their relationships that others, while others will let the whole world know their business. I learned more than what I was looking for in the article I chose, I also found out that young adults that are institutionalized view and treat intimate relationships different that non-institutionalized adolescences.
It showed that lower-class adolescents were more likely to engage in intimate relationship practices, things like early marriage, cohabitation and sexual activity which can lead to further education and economic deprivation. The article implied that lower-class young adults have limited access to the special opportunities of emerging adulthood. The article also stated that social class indirectly shapes the relationships of groups like military personnel, prisoners and sexual minorities whose memberships are highly class graded and who are subject to state-controlled relationship constraints.
