Social Attitudes Towards Interracial Relationships
This study will focus on the general social attitudes and behaviors towards interracial and cross-race romantic relationships and friendships among college students.
RQ1: What are the general social attitudes towards interracial relationships?
RQ2: What are the factors affecting interracial relationships?
RQ3: What situational characteristics foster cross-race friendships among adults?

This study will examine scientific evidences related to interracial and cross-race romantic relationships and friendships. This study’s purpose is to determine which factors, in particular, influence how an individual feels towards interracial relationships and whether or not certain factors influence the individual’s attitudes, behaviors, and decisions to

    Department of Communication and Mass Media University of Wyoming Laramie, Wyoming, USA Currently, limited research exists that explores the socially taboo topic of interracial dating between African Americans and European Americans. Historically, African Americans and European Americans have had a highly destructive relationship of enslavement and oppression, which has resulted in a history of mistrust, according to P. H. Collins (African American Feminist Thought : Knowledge, Consciousness and the Politics of Empowerment, New York,Routledge, 1990). As a result, this relationship symbolizes the institutionalized oppression embedded in race relations despite the very intimate nature of this romantic relationship. Using the centrality of race within the context of romantic relationships, this study was designed to determine how race in uences the communicative process. Q-sort methodology was used, which required participants to determine what waiting, hinting, direct, and third-party intervention strategies they would use to initiate a date in both same-race and interracial contexts. Findings reveal that when comparing verbal strategies across both contexts and open-ended responses to likelihood or reality of dating interracially, participants were resistant to the idea of dating a person from another race. External factors such as family and society were cited as primary deterrents to involvement in an interracial romantic relationship. In general, participants in this study used more social distancing strategies for initiating interracial dating relationships than same-race dating relationships.     The first topic that is going to be addressed is stereotypes and dating. I am more familiar with this topic then the other two topics because I was the once who did the research for our group presentation about this. I came across numerous articles that were very eye opening to me. The first article I will talk about is called, "Is Love Becoming Color Blind?". I really enjoyed reading through this article because it had personal examples from three different interracial couples. The first couple was Kristina Adamski and John Phillips, who were both in their early thirties. In the article it stated that being an interracial couple has been less of a challenge because the two communicate their feelings, and they have a large supportive network of family and friends. Kristina also said, "The key is to have a diverse circle of friends and people who are open-minded." I think that statement from Kristina is very true and if everyone can keep that in mind then we could easily grow not just as people, but also as a country. In that very same article it also talked about blacks and whites, and how many people who are under the age of 30 who cross the color line without giving a second thought to race. That statement right there is a huge statement when talking about the positives to a color blind society. When you can look at someone who you are attracted to for their personality and not the color or their skin, that shows a lot about our country and how we are changing for the better. In that same article, another couple who spoke very wise words were 32 year old Paquita and her 34 year old husband Craig Morgan. This interracial married couple has two beautiful biracial children. They live in Atlanta Georgia where race is still an issue, but Paquita did state that "Race is quickly becoming more and more of a non-issue." There were nearly 1.3 million married interracial couples in 1994, the Census Bureau reported, four times the numbers in 1970. In most cases, many of the teens polled in this survey said that their parents were not a major obstacle in this issue. Sixty-four percent of teens say their parents don't mind that they date interracially, or wouldn't mind if they did. Almost three/fourths of black, white or Hispanic students polled agreed that interracial dating was not a big issue at their schools (Peterson).
