Introduction

As our world expands through the growing abilities and applications of computers in our everyday lives, it seems that the role of the computer has been reversed. Before we knew that the computer only understood what we programmed it to understand; however, now the majority of our society is learning more from computers than they are able to input into it. Dumm (1986 p.69)

History

"The human aspiration to create intelligent machines has appeared in myth and literature for thousands of years, from stories of Pygmalion to the tales of the Jewish Golem." Anat Treister-Goren, Ph.D. (http://www.a-i.com/)

The concepts of the development of artificial intelligence can be traced as far back as ancient Greece. Even something as small as the abacus has in someway led to the idea of artificial intelligence. However, one of the biggest breakthroughs in the area of AI is when computers were invented.

Many encyclopaedias and other reference works state that the first large-scale automatic digital computer was the Harvard Mark 1, which was developed by Howard H. Aiken (and team) in America between 1939 and 1944. However, in the aftermath of World War II it was discovered that a program controlled computer called the Z3 had been completed in Germany in 1941, which means that the Z3 pre-dated the Harvard Mark I. Following shortly after Z3, Britain's Colossus in 1943 and two years later America came up with another system ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer)

Years later in 1956 John Von

As a novice programmer and a participant in Lego robotics I find the controversy surrounding artificial intelligence very intriguing. Programmers, computer scientists, and researchers alike have debated about the possibility of artificial intelligence becoming more intelligent than humans. Because I do have some knowledge of how computers work I can see why this topic is sparking so much interest. The thought of something that we created having the potential to surpass us is riveting. It’s impossible to fathom the idea that humans may lose their spot as the alphas of the world. In this paper I will break down the arguments surrounding this topic by putting them into simpler terms and prove why one side may be superior to the other.…

When I became interested in computer science, one of the areas that intrigued me the most was that of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI was futuristic back when I first attended college and the ideas that surrounded it seemed unattainable and unrealistic. Today the development of AI has been achieved and continues to grow and expand into new uses.…

This paper investigates and provides factual research on Mr. Herbert Simon and his contributions to the founding of Artificial Intelligence. Herbert A. Simon was one of the founding fathers of artificial intelligence. Simon, who, along with Allen Newell and J.C. Shaw, wrote the first AI program in 1956, received many honors in his lifetime, including the Nobel Prize in Economic Science in 1978. Simon was a true renaissance man. He researched human decision-making and problem-solving processes and the implications of those processes for social institutions.…

Often the debate is limited to what the pros and cons of AI would be, rather than focusing on whether AI will happen in the first place. This different angle on the AI debate, however, must be held up to the same scrutiny as the proponents and opponents of AI are held to. There are some strong arguments made in this article. However, what Walsh fails to see in his prediction that humans will never create artificial intelligence is the history of innovation. History has shown time and time again that innovation triumphs over its…

Computers have become one of our necessities in our daily life which makes it so hard to imagine a time when they did not really exist. And the birth of first computer occurred in 1950. It was the Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator or ENIAC. It was made out of 18,000 vacuum tubes which made it to consume about 180,000 watts of electrical power. However, it was only capable to give function such as multiplying numbers rapidly. Due to rapid growth in population, Census Bureau of United States decided to have a machine to tabulate the data, hence,…

While a machine is just a machine made of metal, plastic, silicone and computer chips, it is only as smart as the human that programmed it right? The strides made thus far are only be the beginning of the huge impact and achievements of the computer revolution , and technological advances are creating machines, usually computers that are able to make seemingly intelligent decisions, or act as if possessing intelligence of a human scale. It is only a matter of time before we live in a world of robots that serve humans as portrayed in the 20th Century Fox movie "I Robot", because researchers are creating systems which can mimic human thought, understand speech and even play games with us.…
