Both Shoshone tribes symbol and hand gesture helped create the name the Snake River. This hand gesture was a S kind of symbol and means “We are the people who live by the river with many fish.”
The Snake River creates 2 major boundaries. The first of these boundaries is a 216-mile boundary between Oregon and Idaho. The river turning north creates this boundary. The second boundary created by the snake is a short 20-50 mile boundary between Washington and Idaho.
