Raising smartphone estimates. We raise our global smartphone market forecast by 9%/15% to 688mn/885mn units (46%/29% growth) in 2012/2013, driven strength in both high end and low end segments. We believe the addressable market for smartphones is 2.35bn longer term, resulting in effective penetration of only 33% currently. With significant improvements in availability of lower end smartphones and LTE being an incremental driver, we expect effective smartphone penetration to rise to 100% and lead to smartphone volumes of 1.18bn units by 2015, 26% CAGR. On ASPs we believe the mix shift down market can be offset by Apple’s unprecedented ability to grow the high end, and hence see limited pressure near term. We continue to rely on our proprietary smartphone vendor scorecard which is based on nine metrics (software, services, cloud, product, brand, distribution, compute convergence, IPR and chipset efficiency) which we believe drive success in smartphones. We conclude that secular share gainers will be Apple, Samsung and Huawei and see scope for Nokia’s share to recover. There are increasing signs of vulnerability for Motorola Mobility, HTC and Sony and a rapid decline for RIM. It is about more than just the phone now…think compute. Increasingly, we believe that success in smartphones will be impacted by success in…

Roughly 15 years ago a new product emerged onto the market. American consumers could now purchase and use telephones that would travel with them in their automobiles. However, these inventions were large, bulky, the size of a briefcase, and weighed roughly 10 pounds. Modern day Americans have found a place in their everyday lives for this once jaw-dropping invention. Americans have also demanded, and received, adjustments to these mobile telephones. Today it is possible to purchase mobile phones that are hardly the size of one’s palm for an extremely low cost to the consumer. The recent surge in use of cellular phones has changed the way most Americans communicate. Conversely the internet has done the same. However, cell phones have grown at a much more exponential rate and have become the absolute necessity for many people. Cell phones have had a sociological impact unparalleled by any technological innovation before them. Cell phones have been at the center of controversy and skepticism, but they have also been praised for usefulness and their inevitability. This technology has been focused upon as being the source of brain cancer, car accident, attention deficit disorder, and migraines. However it has also proven to be the tool of the most successful people in the business world. The thesis this paper proposes is that cell phones have had a negative social impact but are still quite inevitable.…

In today’s society cellular devices are not only popular in the United States, but in many other countries worldwide. Not only do cell phones contribute to one’s personal life, but business use as well. Over the last decade, electronic-based companies such as Samsung and Apple have collaborated with cellular-phone carriers, and have studied the average consumer to find endless ways to improve the cellular phone. As a result, the smart phone was born. With their ability to provide users with instant access to communication, entertainment, Internet access, calendar, news, social media, and much more, the smart phone revolutionized and shifted the path of modern technology. In 2006, Apple began this revolution with their release of the iPhone. Being the first proper smart phone, many other companies attempted to mimic the unbeatable features and technology that Apple had included with the iPhone. Though many had failed in doing so, Google managed to keep up with the iPhone with their Android software. Soon enough, Google’s Android software became the dominant smart phone based software for smart phones not manufactured by Apple. Because of this, Android phones had become just as popular as iPhones. This paper will explore the similarities and differences between both Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android.…

Cell phones have changed the way people socially interact with each other. Nowadays, anyone anywhere can just pick up their cell phone and call each other at any time of the day or night. (Stewart 1). In the past when there were just house phones around, people could use the excuse “Sorry I wasn’t home to answer your call” but now, with the emerging of cell phones, people will get a hold of you somehow. Cell phones are considered to be your own personal property while house phones are considered to be used for the family. Cell phones depend on satellite and signal, which means anyone, can take their cell phones anywhere they choose, while house phones depend on the wires in the house which limits anyone from using it outside of the house. (Stewart 1). For example, someone could be on their house phone and their little brother could be eavesdropping on the conversation. No one would want that, would they? On the other hand, cell phones are more personal and most of them have Wi-Fi which leads them to be connected to the internet. Now people are more socially involved on the web through Facebook, Twitter, Instant Messaging, etc. However, cell phones have both a positive and negative effect on people.…
