Karl was a boy who wasn’t treated like a animal as a child, he was raised in a shed. He was given food once a day and was feed out of a dog dish. So instead of letting Frank go down the same road he did, he figured he would ruin his second chance at life. Karl claimed that the world was too big, due to his lack of exposure to the world. He felt that the mental hospital or jail was a better suit for himself. Although he really was doing well working at the small engine repair shop, he could fix anything.
As the movie goes on we find out more and more about Karl’s childhood. He tells us how when he was young his parents gave him a shoe box and told him to bury it. They told him not to open it, he said he looked inside. It was his baby brother, he had issues so he parents didn’t want him. We realize that a mental hospital maybe able to change some people, but others simply can’t avoid what the heads tell them is right.
