Sleep Deprivation In High School
Teenagers academic problems are commonly mistaken for being “lazy.” Parents usually think that the reason their kids don’t get “good” grades is because their children don’t put enough effort into school. Although, maybe the problem is that kids these days don’t get enough sleep. You may say, “well go to bed earlier”, but society expects students to do their homework, study, be fit, have a social life, and then go to bed at a reasonable time. That’s a big expectation for young people to handle these days. So, i think that school should start later in the day, because it would benefit the students academically and behavior issues would decrease. Sleep deprivation isn’t something that students should go through at such a young age, because it

High school classes should begin later in the day and end later in the day to accommodate students' natural sleep clocks, this would get them on a schedule and would also allow them to stay energized through they whole day. Schools should end later in the day so that when students get home, they won't have time to take a nap, which tend to make people stay up later then they need to. Teenagers need lots of sleep and by beginning and ending the classes later would make that a lot easier! If schools were to open up later in the day then students would pay more attention in their classes; They would be more alert and awake. Beginning schools later in the day would have a positive effect on everyone including the teachers and administration,…

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

When kids don’t get up it’s for a reason not because they're lazy it because they're tired of getting up at like 3:00 in the morning. In the article “The teen who woke up her school” by Jane Bianchi, it says “Missouri high schools start time 7:50 to 7:20 am” that's way too early. In “Should schools start later” by Lisa .M. Herrington, it says “40% of american schools start classes before 8 am” again way too early. In the video “Abc news report” it stated “next fall or so the school board of edu might move school back a half an hour”. I am in agreement with school starting later.…

Although research shows that teens experience changes in their internal sleep clocks that make it more difficult to wake up and go to bed early, starting school later in the day will not be a solution to this problem. Starting and ending school later will only take opportunities away from students. Starting school later may allow students more time to rest, but it does not allow them much time after school to have an opportunity to participate in sporting events, clubs, or have a job. For example, if school didn't let out until late in the afternoon, teens would not be able to have a job because it would be too late for them to go to work. Also, school ending later leaves less time for student athletes to participate in sports. To many…

Schools should start later in the day because high schoolers would get close to the recommended amount of sleep, which will prevent them from sleeping in class and it will decrease the risk of students getting into dangerous situations. That is why I believe that school should have a later start time. "Teenagers are being asked to get up at the wrong time. They are being asked to be in school when their brains are still asleep” (Carskadon). Studies have shown that schools with a start time between eight and eight thirty-five had a sixty-six percent decrease in tardiness. There were also major increases in the grades of first hour classes. A lot of students are not getting their work done at home because they are so tired from the long, busy day of school therefore, their grades are dropping. Schools shouldn’t be making students choose between their grades and their…

Many negative consequences result from the ongoing sleep deprivation. Students find it hard to wake up in the morning, not necessarily because they are lazy, but because their body clock is mismatched with the demands of life, and because irregular sleep interferes with their sleep cycle; resulting in increased difficulties falling asleep at night and waking up in the…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

Imagine you are back in your high school years, and your alarm goes off before the sun has risen because you have to be at school early in the morning to start your day.
