“Mrs. Jane, you were off the chain last night. One of the students said to me as I approach class this morning. I was horrified: because I didn’t’ realize I was acting crazy. It wasn’t until after talking to one of the staff at school I discovered the student was actually compliment me in a good way and not insulting me. The word off the chain has become the latest craze in vocabulary words with double meanings to hit the streets and today’s youth is eating it all up.
Off the chain is just one of many words in today’s vocabulary that has been revamped by younger generation. The Urban Dictionary, an online dictionary of slang words used by teenagers today, defines the word off the chain as meaning a great deal of fun. It is meant to describe a great time they had. You may hear them use the word to talk about how cool a party was that they went to such as Joshua threw a party last night and it was off the chain you should have come.
The most frequently understood definition of the word off the chain is in Wiktionary Free Dictionary; “free from work or direct supervision. In reference to slave labor, workers are chained, or to the figurative chain of workers of an assembly line. Hearing the word off the chain automatically brings to mind, do you think you are off the chain for that stunt you all pulled out in front of my building yesterday?

Another meaning we relate the worked off the chain to is crazy, insane. The definition of off the chain refers to crazy. We have all been there, where at the end of the week when hour check is not ready or they forgot to turn payroll in and you are in the Human Resources office acting out and they say Mrs. Jane you are off the chain today.
As you can see the word off the chain really doesn’t mean or it is not being used in society as it really is or it really should be used. We as people throw words out there and make up our own meaning for them or what we see fit. We as younger people

As 5 o’clock crept up, I began to notice a shift in the general audience. Many teenagers began appearing as their parent’s dropped them off front, and the upperclassmen drove. Schrobsdorff tells of how her own 16 year old daughter stated that the degrading jokes and language used by kids describing the Steubenville incident is common among young people today. She then goes on to say that these types of jokes and vulgar humor are “just part of teen online culture now.” Although Schrobsdorff admits, “Perhaps it’s time we made it our responsibility, as parents, to explain where the line is and who is crossing it …” the time to take responsibility instead of make excuses is during the childhood and development of the…

A “quintessential 80’s movie,” The Breakfast Club is a film rich with psychological principles. This movie is about a group of high school teenagers filled with personal angst who spend a Saturday serving their detention sentences in the school library. Each teenager from a different clique, they didn’t expect to relate as much to each other as they thought. As they begin to get to know each other, the vengeful assistant principal Vernon starts to single out Bender, the rebel of the group of teenagers. Initially, none of the other teenagers help Bender. This demonstrates the bystander effect because they don’t help Bender; this effect can be explained by the absence of group membership and cohesiveness because the 5 strangers don’t really know each other yet. But when assistant principal Vernon locks Bender in a closet, the group has already established trustworthy relationships among its members, so they decide to help Bender escape. Also, assistant principal Vernon debatably exhibited deindividuation when he proceeded to threaten Bender and to lock him inside a closet. Normally, an assistant principal of a high school wouldn’t speak cruelly or do such things to a student, but because of the situation (their history together and how Bender always seemed to have won), Vernon acts this way. Finally, each teenager demonstrated conformity in his/her own way. Bender covered up his scars from the abuse he received from his dad so that he wouldn’t be judged as weak for them; Andy, the jock, covered up his hatred for his father because he didn’t want to be seen as abnormal; Brian, the geek, contemplated suicide but never told anyone because he didn’t want to be perceived as depressed; Allison, the outcast, lies compulsively because she has to keep up a reputation she has created; and Claire, the popular girl, hides the fact that she is still a virgin because all of her friends are not virgins and she doesn’t want to be considered…

My understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of T.E.H.O. was deepened through the interactive oral. In the Interactive Oral we discussed the how the town knew about the murder and stayed quiet because of the mob mentality. A student brought up the connection between the mob mentality and the internet today, tying both to safety in numbers. This brought up the idea of how powerful the mafia is having this mob mentality over the majority of the people. Furthering on, the group discussed how the internet and the mafia both create this Mob mentality. One person brought up a video of how boys, not men, were throwing out rape threats to a woman through the internet. This was followed by a discussion on the false confidence and disconnection the internet creates. The internet creates a disconnection between people creating a false confidence that makes people act as if they were alone in the locker room, except it is being displayed to the world. The power of the mafia and the internet are so great it creates this barrier which in to T.E.H.O silences the town and today gives people false confidence to say rude and totally…

She opens her article by recounting her personal experience of schoolies week in high school, when “there were no wire barriers, dance raves, or identity bracelets” needed during schoolies week, and “nobody’s life came to a standstill as a result of missing out”. By including this anecdote in the beginning of her article, Wilson instantly engages the reader, and gives them a picture of how schoolies has evolved over the years, from a “quiet affair involving a couple of hundred school leavers”, to a “booze and drug fest of the highest order”. The anecdotal evidence also encourages the reader to accept the writer as a credible source of information due to her personal experience in the matter, and the evidence she provides which show that “at least a third of the kids involved [in schoolies] are underage”, enhances this effect by adding even more legitimacy to her arguments, convincing the audience to share in her point of…

The well-known song “Don’t You Forget about Me” plays at the end of the movie The Breakfast Club, signaling not only the end of the famous movie, but also the end of the transitory group that had developed in the earlier scenes. Although movie was released over twenty years ago, high school students today can still use the labels that are examined in the movie to identify themselves in the cruel world they call high school. With the final lines “you see us as you want to see us...In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions,” the point of the movie finally becomes apparent; stereotypes are not accurate representations of teenagers, but instead they accurately represent who teenagers think they are. There is no doubt that students all come with labels; it is inevitable. But whether a student is a brain, a jock or a princess, they are all greatly impacted by the stereotypes and boundaries that are a part of each of their social groups.…

Milner is careful to point out that American high schools do not cause teenagers to behave in competitive and sometimes cruel ways, but rather it provides the ideological framework for a particular type of social system based on status and lifestyle differences. It is this framework, not immaturity or poor parenting, that unsuspectingly refines some of the least desirable features of America's consumer society, encouraging adolescents to become hyper-sensitive to these status hierarchies, and obsess over who sits with whom in the lunchroom, dating protocol, and what people are wearing.…
